28mm VM carbs
26 Oct 2019 07:32
Hello all, I recently got a full set of 28mm VM carbs off eBay. I have an 86 Kz 1000p with the original carbs . I’m wanting to put these (old school) carbs on it ,no particular reason I like trying different things and learning different stuff. But I don’t know the year model of these carbs or what original bike they were on the only stamped number I found was on the cross member it’s 120 over 5, does anybody know what these are exactly, thanks for reading guys

Pics would be of more help.
You will need a set of earlier (smaller) Z9/Z1000 inlet rubbers also to fit them.

Wow! Those carbs look like a nightmare. Please don't install them as is and expect them to run. They need a complete rebuild including unganging. Personally, I'd strip off the red paint straight away. They have provision for an accelerator pump too so you need to sort out that business (either get it working or disable it.)

Okay good. You might want to check Partzilla and try to match up the carbs to the bike they came from originally. Should be late 70's 1000. Check current jet sizes and try to recycle them assuming they are stock. I'll take a stock Mikuni jet (after cleaning) over a new aftermarket jet any day. You will need to source soft parts like O-rings and gaskets of course. Z1 Enterprises should be able to help with that.

Ok ,yea I used partzilla a lot over the years, the eBay ad said (drag bike). I can’t quite make out the numbers on the main jet , but believe the pilot is 20. And the jet needles are longer and more tapered compared to other needles I got laying around off of other bikes I have had.I found a rebuilt kit for the pumper but the very bottom part is a sensor ,that’s if I read everything correctly. I would like the pumper to work but I’m not needing a sensor. Can that be left like it is or does it need to be capped , I didn’t see where it could leak but I’m not sure. This is going to be a learn as I go sorta thing.

Good score on those 28mm pumpers.
The best Mikunis of the bunch fitted to a stock bike.
Originally fitted to USA Z1R's , MK2's and possibly ST's
The triangular casting is blank and does not need any parts or cap so leave as is.
The triangle diapragm was only used on the 26mm version and funnily they were the worst of the bunch.
