So the wire will be on the engine side of the carb ? I was thinking it went on the side with the small notch on the slide.

The small notch on the intake side could be de-formed (out of shape) by the slider pressure if you use a steel wire!!!
This could cause some (high/rough) idle trouble on the pilot Jet jeting air/fuel Ratio.

Ok so I’ll stay away from that side, I have some 20ga copper wire that I had left over from a underground dog fence, I think it will work and it’s softer than say electric fence wire.

I measure from the outlet side, but I don't think it really matters. Copper wire is softer than the slides so it doesn't mark them.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Copper wire is softer than aluminum and does´t mark them but steel wire does imprints on aluminum!!!!
Anyways later you have to do a vaccum sync after a valve clearence check to get a smoth idle running.

By any chance any one know the float height in mm I got one over flowing and I don’t have the little screw and tube to check it according to the manual, I was hoping someone would know the measurements off the carb body mating surface

On Z1 carbs I close the float valve with my finger carefully pressed on the tab and measure the height of the float from the edge of the carb. It's about 16 to 17 mm. That gets me in the ballpark. But not sure if all VM's are the same.

Ok I’ll try and see , one is wrong now anyway so taking them off and on is unavoidable anyway right lol

Do it with the floats installed. Just press down on the brass piece directly over top of the float valve. Depress the valve lightly until it's closed and then measure the amount of float sticking above the edge of the carb bowl.

If you take a piece of vinyl tubing and grind sort of a pencil point on it you can then screw it into the float bowl threads to make a "clear tube" gauge. That's the best way I've found measure fuel level, not from measuring float height.

How long of a tube, if it’s to long want it give a false reading?
