I think I went with 135 main jets to start. There are 17.5 pilots, you are correct, and I think the clip is in the middle. I will probably start with bigger pilots and see if it makes any difference. The fuel screw adjustment doesn't seem to do much at all. I've had them out as far as 1 full turn. Just can't believe they'd be that far off to make this thing run so bad. I guess that engine probably is pretty thirsty though.
Thanks

I had 17.5 pilots in my vm33's with 1135cc's.mains were a bit rich at 140 .
it seems to make sence that u would need more with 1260cc's.

Davel - perfect timing for me, just took my first ride today on my totally rebuilt bike with brand new RS 34's. Bad news is they ran terribly. Do you have some set up specs to share? I think it's running lean but I'm shocked it runs so bad.

Do brand new carbs need synched?? It sounds like they are way off...

Damn I wish I wouldn't have sold my 33's until I tried out the new engine, then I would know it's the carbs for sure.

I have a set of the RS36's on my FJ1200 and yes you will need to sync your brand new carbs when you install them. You will also need to check the float levels too.

Thanks .That was a good read .
What methods are u useing to determine wether u have acheived the proper jetting?

I'm able to get pretty close by feel (test riding) and reading plugs. I determined main jet size on a dyno with an exhaust gas analyzer.

The exhaust gas analyzer is helpful not only with jetting but also with intake port and exhaust mods. When I tested this engine with an open V&H megaphone, the air-fuel ratio was very erratic below 4000RPM regardless of jet and needle adjustments. After installing the competion baffle the AFR below 4K was much more consistent and midrange torque/throttle response improved dramatically.

Not sure if this is still of interest to you Mark1122 but thought I'd share my RS34 experience.

I've installed a 1075 kit and have experimented with a V&H and Jardine 4-1 exhaust. My experience is that the RS34s are great and will provide excellent throttle response, midrange and top end power IF the rest of engine is set up properly. Here are a few things I've found through experience:
* Exhaust tuning is critical. I've been able to get good results from both a V&H pipe and my Jardine pipe but not with the stock baffle installed. Removing the baffle in the V&H pipe produced good power from 4000RPM to redline. Inserting a competition baffle with a 2.25" ID brought my usable power range to 3000RPM. The competition baffle made a noticable increase in mid-range torque and eliminated reversion above 3K RPM (no more carb clacking). Experimening with and finding the correct exhaust baffle size for your setup will produce better throttle response, more mid range torque and better fuel mileage without hurting top end power.

Hope this is useful.

What size was the stock baffle ? i had 1 made last year at 2". I did notice it pulled lower than no baffle.

I was just looking back at my set up with the 33's and I'm surprised to see I was running a 30 pilot jet! Never fouled a plug either.

Is it safe to assume that if the 30's worked in the 33mm carbs that I could start there with the 34mm carbs??

33 sb set up:
130 main jets
30 pilot jet
6DJ30 jet needle with the clip on the second groove from the top
Mixture screws 1.5 turns out

It will be interesting to hear where u end up. 22.5 pilots were rich in my 1135 motor.
where is a good place to buy pilots for the rs34's?
Or does anyone hve any to 22 pilots trade?

Not sure of the stock baffle size. I threw it out. It was much smaller than 2" for sure...too small. I'd like to try a 2" baffle . Here's an image of the one I'm currently using (2.5"OD). The perforated stainless tubing and fiberglass were ordered from LAchoppers.com they sell lots of different diameters of perf stainless. I fabricated the aluminum retainer.

Nice job on the baffle.haw long did u make it and how did u deal with the inner end?
I bought a universal 2" perf tube from a Harley shop.then i had the center of my kerker tip ground off till the tube slit in. Then he welded them together.my perf tube was quite long so i cut it down till it would just fit tight into the bend.
Seems to work well.It would be nice to test dif tubes and jets on a dyno but im afraid it is not in my budget.

I did the same thing as you on the inner end. Both the V&H and Kerker megaphones are made in two sections. The V&H has a small step on the inside of that seam. So I cut the perf tubing to fit tight against that step between the two sections and used the aluminum retainer to hold it in place. Had to flair the end out just a little bit for a snug fit with the 2.5 OD tubing. This image shows the flair on the left end.

Keep me posted on how things progress with 34s on the 1300...
