What many people don't yet realize is that you can no longer ship a package to the USA without a code. To get the code you need to use an app that identifies what is in the package, how much it is worth and then pay the tariff before you even go to your PO.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar.

The news this morning says "The change, laid out in an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Sept. 4, reduces auto duties from 27.5% and establishes a baseline 15% tariff on nearly all Japanese imports, with separate treatment for aerospace products."
Previous articles gave impression the overall rate would decrease, todays change is for cars and trucks imported to usa from Japan.
Japan Tariff Cut Takes Effect Tuesday: US Lowers Duties On Cars, Light Trucks And Auto Parts To 15%

No company in the US is going to start making those parts, so forget about "creating jobs in America" as reasoning. It's just a money grab.
I don't sell parts so I cannot share your frustrations. However, in the longer run, the market will level the field and production will move here.

Re: Tariff Charges
Today 07:48 - Today 09:06I've seen some references about auto manufacturers shifting more production to the USA. I count this as a good thing. Stuff like that. But do you think anyone is going to set up tooling to build Norton isolator mounts in the US? The answer to that is no.
No company in the US is going to start making those parts, so forget about "creating jobs in America" as reasoning. It's just a money grab.

And this is NOT about me and my paltry sales of rebuild motorcycle carburetors. To me, where the hit will be felt by us motorcycle guys, is when it comes to importing oddball parts, only available overseas. Maybe zed will chime in regarding selling his air correction jets and choke plungers? Should I start making these parts myself, in the great USA, and sell them here in the states?

Today 09:40Bill I admire your optimism, my opinion (and it is just that, I'm no global economist) but I believe you will see a selection of the below
No company in the US is going to start making those parts, so forget about "creating jobs in America" as reasoning. It's just a money grab.

- some company's will "bite the bullet" and build US based facilities
- some will "blow smoke" up the administration for a couple of years implementing delays and hoping that a viable candidate will be found to replace your current leader
- some will just stop supplying the US if demand drops too far

Love the optimism Bill!! What the curve ball during the transition is what's correct rate?? Seems to change on a whim, 80 precent one day and 15 percent a week later like 73Z1 mentioned and "someone" thought his oatmeal was too cold and changed again to 50 percent within a week?? That's putting the ass in assumption. I suppose though, lets not get our pantaloons in a bunch, just further separates us regardless of political division. You Are Correct KZQ, this too will pass, and we will have stories and tall tales to tell, ha.

Re: Tariff Charges
Today 10:40 - Today 10:43
Some guys on a bicycle site I frequent report receiving bills for duties several days or even a couple of weeks AFTER the product was delivered. And no forewarning, other than what we read about on the news.
How's this for confusion? And don't forget, many shipping companies like UPS charge an admin fee also...
"The postal carrier or "qualified party" (e.g., USPS, Royal Mail, La Poste) that decides how duties are collected on packages moving through the postal stream must collect those duties from shippers or recipients and remit them to U.S. Customs.
The carriers have two methods to choose from — either a percentage of the country's tariff rate (ad valorem) or a flat per-package fee. With the flat rate, there are three tiers: $80 if the IEEPA tariff rate — the trade duties put into effect by Trump using emergency economic powers — is under 16% (such as EU goods at 15%); $160 if it's between 16% and 25% (such as Vietnam at 20%); and $200 if it's above 25% (such as India at 50% or China at 30%). After a six-month transition period, the flat fee option goes away and all packages will be subject to the percentage tariff rate only."

Re: Tariff Charges
Today 12:33A few years back I was having a problem with a Yamaha that had an intermittent miss. I struggled for a good long while until I read a reference about a small company in Czechoslovakia (republic?) that offered a complete replacement capacitive discharge ignition system for $148.00. I ordered one and was very pleased to find that their system even included the correct plug connectors. Whole change out took just minutes.Nessism post=917231 userid=14026 Should I start making these parts myself, in the great USA, and sell them here in the states?
To answer your question, if you have the technology, YES !

Re: Tariff Charges
Today 12:55 - Today 12:59Hi Wookie,What you can't get away from is anything produced in Asia or the Orient will cost you the end user significantly more if produced in the US (or Europe) unless your countrymen will work for $5 an hour and ignore H&S and environmental legislation
I've heard that complaint often enough. Yes, moving production from less developed countries to Europe or the States will raise costs. But which is the more honorable price distortion: Raising prices so that local folks can survive with a reasonable wage or shipping the work to places that have no or little environmental or health and safety regulations just to cut costs.
Frankly I'm tired of hearing that Americans won't take menial, unpleasant jobs. If local folks need $20 or $25 an hour to survive while picking lettuce, that's the true cost. It cannot be escaped, it can only be evaded. I'm not sure that tariffs are the best answer but if they help level the field, I like 'em.

Soo True KZQ but might i ask you the same repetitive question? Tell Your grandkids to leave their phones at home and get Your butts out in the field and pick those strawberries for 10hrs a day X 6 days a week. I dare You, ha. You won't be getting any Christmas presents this year, just a quick swift kick in the posterior. hehe. I can sense a Chunk of charcoal/dirty rock in your sock hanging off the mantel, Charlie Brown style.

In my conversation with a Dyna tech. he told me they were sourcing some of their parts overseas but retained the ability to make them here if needed. They moved production out of California for obvious reasons.
