Doesn't make sense if actual ownership didn't change. Unless the tariffs even apply to shipping costs?

I assume some of those "personal belongings" where purchased in Japan. I know in the UK if for example if you purchased a car abroad, it has to of been registered in your name for a minimum period of time in the country of purchase to avoid duty's when you bring it back. Lets face it, anything you buy from abroad that you pay for when ordering is technically your personal posession whether you bring it with you or it's shipped ?

The US had a deminimus of $800 that allowed stuff to be imported tariff free but that was eliminated a few months ago.  I'm selling a lot of my Z1 stuff and would love to sell to US buyers but it's just too costly and complicated to do it nowadays.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar.

So, I very recently purchased motorcycle items from two UK vendors and one from a Canadian vendor. All were shipped to me and the UK vendors were delivered with no tariff charges. The Canadian item was delivered with an 80% tariff charge (totaling US$105.00). I refused delivery of the Canadian item.

The whole system is screwed, it seems to depend on the courier as to how diligent they are in collecting duties. Since Brexit we in the UK have to pay duties on parts from the EU but recently where I have ordered parts some have charged and some haven't - I don't anybody is very clear on what and who they should charge !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to check the tariff charges are correct. I ordered some Brembo disks from Italy and Fedex was listed as the customs broker. Fedex threw the book at the shipment applying erroneous tariffs -  light truck rotors, heavy truck rotors, passenger car rotors - totaling to 80% of the product cost. I contested the charges because the disks were clearly labeled as motorcycle disks on the customs forms and they can't be all three things at once anyway. Fedex then had the audacity to tell me if they looked at the tariff charges and they were correct they would charge me another $150 on top of that. That was 6 months ago and haven't heard anything back. Fedex is already a horrible parcel carrier and with them acting as  a custom broker it seems like the use it as an excuse to overcharge on tariffs hoping people ignorantly pay them. I hate Fedex and if they try and come back with their hand out I'll tell them to piss up a rope.
