Tariff Charges

Has any USA based member ordered parts abroad, and gotten hit with a tariff surcharge upon delivery?  I'm not even sure if this is how tariff charges are imposed?  On the end user/purchaser?

I recently bought some carb fuel Tee's, seller listed NJ as their location, only to receive tracking from China.  Will they try to hit me with a tariff charge on delivery?  After seeing the shipping tracking, I told the seller that I'll refuse shipment if any extra charges are added on.  Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this yet?

From what I've read, tariffs are paid by the seller/shipper. But it doesn't take an economics scholar to know these costs will be passed on to the consumer as higher prices on each item.  I doubt they will be itemized separately like tax and shipping charges.  But I could be wrong, won't be the first time.

Who pays will depend on whether they call it a "tariff" or "import duty" I received the below Email from Interparcel today. I guess you boys are going to need to think twice before ordering from overseas now :(

Important Update:U.S. to remove $800 duty-free
limit and increase tariffs
If you send parcels to the U.S., two major changesthis August could affect costs and customs clearance:1 - New Import Tariffs - Effective 7 August
  • Tariffs now apply based on where goods are made, not where you send them from.
  • Rates vary from 10% to 50% depending on the country of manufacture.
  • Example: A UK shipment containing goods made in Japan = 15% tariff.
2 - End of $800 Duty-Free Limit - Effective 29 August
  • The de minimis exemption (currently allowing parcels under $800 USD to enter the U.S. without import taxes or duties) is ending.
  • Even low-value parcels may now face import duties.
What This Means For You
  • Expect higher import costs for goods from high-tariff countries.
  • Get your customs paperwork right – correct HS codes, accurate descriptions, true country of origin.
  • Be transparent with recipients about possible extra charges.
  • Review your supply chain and pricing if you sell to U.S. customers.
Top Tip: Always declare the real country of manufacture to ensure smooth customs clearance and correct duty charges. For full details and help preparing for these changes, read our full blog. READ THE TARIFF GUIDE

China tariffs are in a 90 day delay. Not sure when the 90 days will be up, but may get delayed again.

Tariffs are usually paid by the importer and left to them to decide whether to pass them on or absorb them into their costs.  Trump's claims that foreign countries are paying the tariff are generally false.  It's taken a few months but tariffs are beginning to show up in inflation.

Absolutely correct HRM, however if you are ordering from overseas then "you" then end user are the "importer" and it will likely get called "import duty". Since Brexit this has been an issue for us in the UK when buying from European suppliers (some apply the costs as purchase, some don't and many won't ship to the UK because of the hassles with customs documentation)   There has been occasions where I have ordered parts to be delivered to friends in Germany who have then sent on to me. I sent some parts to a member in Spain and the additional charges he had to pay where more than I had valued the parts at !!!!!!

It's all a cluster and bound to get worse. Wookie Your sheet of info has seemingly a huge emphasis on "origin". How will persons selling old crap, not just bike bits, have a clue where some gadget was produced? It seems like "overreach" to me because the authority inspecting this stuff won't know either. I Never filled in that section on our US two types of customs forms and it didn't seem to matter, always got to it's destination. I believe it's going to halt a lot of person to person transactions just like the 1099K form did a few years back here in the states. Big business can handle it, small person's shouldn't have to hire an account for selling some old couch and stove. Done now, ha.

I think the focus is on "entering" not "leaving" the USA although that may change if the rest of the world "bite back" !!!

I could be wrong but don't think "old crap" is subject to tariffs.

Used parts still attract VAT and import duty in most other countries so "who knows"

Many years ago (around 1985) Canada had a multitude of tariffs on imports, ostensibly to protect domestic markets.  They all disappeared when the government moved to a VAT, or what we call a GST.  Along with that came a free trade agreement with the USA that eventually included Mexico.  I happily imported parts, mostly new from Z1E or Partzilla.  But the shipping cost became more than the parts cost in some cases, so I've stopped buying from Z1E and seldom use Partzilla.  So I can't say if tariffs have been recently added, but I suspect they have, as motorcycles are not considered essential to a healthy life.  Mookie is correct that I as the importer would pay any tariff, along with shipping, brokers fees, GST, PST and whatever other charge is due.  It may be time to go back to midnight auto!
