Wow! Nice work! I can see the manifolds that mount to the carbs, How are they mounted to this nice peice of work?? Did you machine spigots on the carb side of the air box? Or are they flanged and screwed ( don't see any screws ) on like the stock carb manifolds are on a the head?
I know people like to run pods on these bikes, I'm all about leaving the stock air box on. For more than one reason. I have to ask, Can you make a four hole version of this set-up? I can envision freeing up the space where the stock air box goes and using it to consalidate the electrics... It would free up a lot of room and a guy could move all of the under seet items forward.. Seriously nice work sir!

The black rubber "joint" that you can see in the top immage is a Yamaha part # 4JH-14453-00-00, it uses a hose clamp # 90450-59009-00. There is a grove that is wall thickness wide where it locates through the airbox. When the carbs are in position and the hose clamps are tight it securlly mounts the airbox. This was the hardest part to find.
I am working on a 4 hole airbox like this for my 1982 Yamaha Seca XJ650RJ. I have a set of Keihin CR29 carbs for that bike. Most of the problems folks have with mounting pods on older bikes are caused by worn out carbs. The OEM carbs were not great to begin with and 30 + years have not made them any better. The airbox to carb joint will be the hard part to find for that project too.
Upgrades like these always take lots of time to compleat cleanly. I have a notebook and a file on my computer for each of my bikes and I take lots of notes and photos.

i sequestered myself in the shop this last weekend and made some headway.
the upper shock mounting tabs needed relocated to give me some more throw out of the shocks.
so i bent and notched some 4130 tubing and fabricated a new upper mount.
i though it worked out well, and gave me another chance to torture myself fitting and welding them in  !
now i have the range of motion i was wanting.
canyon carver.

i got the material welded between the rear engine mounts.
makes a nice area to mount the compressor to and hide it as well.

in the interest of keeping the fat back wheel and tire centered it is necessary to notch the frame for the chain line.
here is a shot showing the notch and the monster offset necessary for the cs sprocket to line up.
made some templates to use to mark out the material for the notch plating
and some shots with the plating fit.

in this area i didn't want exposed welds on the outside.
here they are metal finished .
here is where i was making sure i had ample (sufficient??)chain to frame clearance.
and that long gold chain  !!!

Re: kz750 custom swingarm fab
15 Apr 2015 17:09I have a 750 twin project i am going to be starting sometime, and i have been looking at ways to brace the frame. I wanted to put a brace over the swingarm pivot, but that would interfere with the air box which i would like to keep. i think this might be a good solution. What thickness did you use for the flat bar?
That chain clearence mod is straight out of the AC sanctuary book. Very nice!
