Coil Mod was created by ken
After years of my KZ1000 being parked the my garage I"ve got it out and trying "Wiredgeorge's" coil mod. While everything went ok up the the point of powering the coil. George's indstruction say to "Install a blue crimp-on “eye” type connector onto each leg of the “Y” and install these connectors onto one of the two small LUGS on each of the coils. Note that the OTHER wire on each coil will be either black or green" I"m not sure what the LUGS are. I see the green wire and the yellow/red wire comming out of the coil which look to be made in to the coil. I also can see two botls on each end of the coil that attaches them to the frame. Are these bolt the "lugs" the Wiregeorge refers to?

Ths for the help.

Ok Otakar, I'll can try that, but the last time I had it out, about 5 yrs ago, I could only get about 20 mile out of a set of plugs (black soot and fouled). I just finished checking the float level and plan on making a manometer to check the carb balance.

OK, The bike is a KZ1000A My father-n-law purchased it new in 1977. I got the about 10 yrs ago after he passed away with just over 11,000 mile on it. After I got it I put new tires on it with hopes to ride it to work, about 30 mile each way. The first and only time I rode it to work it left my along side to road. Had to call my wife to bring a new set of plugs. The bike is all stock (points). I've cleaned to carbs, leveled to floats. Just cleaned every connection I could find with steel wool( your advise) put the tank back on. It fire right up and idled fine. I let it warn up good and put my home made manometer on carb 1&2. 2 started to suck hard. So I of course have to get them balanced. It's raining here now, northwest ohio. So I can't take it out to see of the connnection cleaning did the job.

ditch the mod....like has been said..its only a band-aid....
trace each control harness into main and clean connectors...
pull left side cover and clean all the connectors into that ...make sure battery conns are good....good battery?....buy a 3 dollar multi-meter fron harbor freight
and check charging system......a can of electrical cleaner and an hour or two of labor and you can get back some juice
without the extra wire rats nest the mod involves.....i ll leave my wg comments at the doormat....

Out of curiosity...

With out the mod installed, just OEM wiring to the coils through the ignition-kill- switch, with a properly charged and operating battery installed, what is the voltage to the coils?

If +12Vdc or higher with engine running, coil mod isn't going to help you...

Please keep in mind, our jesting at this mod is not directed at you per say... It's been debated to death and in most cases, installed and problem still existed...

Get some voltage measurements and post them and we'll get you on the right track for troubleshooting your problem...
