One surefire way of testing for good spark is removing plug, reinsert in plug cap and tap the starter button while holding plug with thumb on electrode. Sounds crude but a foolproof way to tell the strength of spark if any at all. (this method not recommended for anyone with a pacemaker). ................................Mike

Stop and take a breath. It was running now it's not and you don't know why. Pretend you've never seen the bike before. Do the basic checks, Fuel delivery, spark and compression. Since it was running I doubt that compression is your problem. But that awful cocktail of fuel is a good starting place. First try to clean out the cylinders, it could simply be flooded. Remove the plugs and spin the engine over 5 or 6 turns to air out the cylinders. Then plug the spark plugs into the wires and lay them on the head so the hex head part touches the head. Turn on the ignition and watch for good spark on all four. Now put the plugs back in and make sure of the plug wiring. It's easy to get 2 or more crossed. remember that 1 & 4 are on the same coil and 2 & 3 are on the other.

Now you have a cold engine with no fuel mixture in the cylinders. Pull the choke and try to start it.

Good luck.

Don't fix it until it's broken.

When I check spark like that I try to find someone else to hold onto the plugs....Cheap fun!

OK, new plugs went in this morning. Put in a new fuel filter while I was in there. Started for 1 second and then died. Won't even come close to starting again. Checked there was fuel in bowls. Got spark from spark plug. Tried with choke on and off. Also with throttle and without. Messed with idle adjustment. Pilot screw is 2 turns out. Nothing.

Any suggestions - other than taking the mf'ing carbs off again?

Blew out cylinders. Nothing. I only checked spark on 1 plug and it was fine. I guess I could check the others but thinking this is not the issue. I am thinking it may be a clogged pilot jet - but I just cleaned it before putting carbs back on. Has to be carb related.

check your fuel line & make sure it's not kinked between the petcock & carbs, & did you put the filter in with the arrow pointing towards the carbs, not the other way, if it's cone shaped, wide end towards carbs, narrow end towards petcock

Could your timing have got disrupted? Wldn't hurt to hook up a meter and give it a quick looksee to eliminate that possibility. ...............................Mike
