Are you running points or electronic ignition? Either way make sure the correct spark is hitting when it is supposed to.

Valve clearance is supposed to be 0.002"~0.004" (0.05mm~0.10mm).
Experience has shown that clearance may be up to 0.006" (0.15mm), especially on the exhaust.

But should not prevent the engine from starting and running.
Which electronic ignition (stock igniter; Dyna-S; something else)?
