So I swapped coil wires left to right and right to left. Now I'm getting backfiring through both the carbs and the exauhst . I would also say the coils need to go back the way they were .I believe this means I need to verify valve clearance and since compression is so low take the head off and make sure valves are seating and look at cylinders? Opinions?

Please don't think I'm trying to be insulting because I'm not, but are you positive the wires than run from the coils to the spark plugs are routed properly? One coil should be attached to plugs 1&4; the other coil should be attached to plugs 2&3. Ed

No insult. Yes left coil fires 1&4 and right coil fires 2&3

I'm taking the head off. Don't want to worry down te road about compression or valves or rings

Fine. The rings were full of debri. Don't know what happened. So while it's apart I'm gonna lap valves new gaskets again! And new rings. Anything else? I can't believe all the rings were stuck. Damn!! I'm gonna hone the cylinders lightly just so the new rings will seat.

Without re reading every part of the thread.... before you go off half cocked...are you sure those are even stock pistons?
Man, they really look to be in rough shape to me...
I can't quite see from both pin sides,
Bore? Piston manufacturer?

apart from other other problems ,the scoring on the piston 4 shown is pretty bad, was the bore rusty? that would explain why the rings are stuck.

Not polarity.

The dual-output ignition coils that I'm familiar with have a non-polar primary winding.
Am thinking that most KZ ignition coils are non-polar and do not have any polarity indication such as plus or minus.
However, there is I believe at one KZ650 model that has + and - marks on the primary terminals. And there may be others. But I don't know the purpose of having primary polarity.

In the case at hand, am thinking possibility of the signal wire that's supposed to be attached to the port-side coil being erroneously attached to the starboard-side, and the the signal wire that's supposed to be attached to the starboard-side coil being erroneously attached to the port-side coil.

In other words, possibility that the signal wires are attached to the wrong coils.

Good Fortune! :)
