would it have anything to do with a piston ring? one not in the ring land correctly.

I wasn't guessing on that, I was just telling you to make sure its installed before rotating. I forgot to snug my tensinor down before rotating my motor over by hand, it jumped a tooth on me. Luckily I caught it before I did any damage. That's why I always double check everything. But the on/off clicking has me wondering? makes me think valves hitting. :dry:

forgot to skip the first pin on the 28 count. or didn't have marks lined up correctly, front level with top the head, and the exhaust cam mark on 28th pin? how can it be cam chain related, but not a mistake during install?

no, install was correct but for one upgrade I did that caused engine to bind.
