I'm partial to the draw thru system for tuning reasons but done some day dreaming about using the HR42 plumbed to a manifold and pressurized. I like the turbo out front but thats better fitted to injection and too many things going on to take on a new learning curve.

Having the turbo out front like Dave's is the best for efficiency. Mine is an old ATP kit with a few adaptations (like the HSR 42).
Yes I'm still running the HSR 42. We've not run the bike on a dyno, but a customer of ours has a 1075cc turbo setup similar to mine - and at 18 lbs of boost hit 150 HP on the dyno in humid and hot Florida.
I have a pressure switch that activates the ignition retard. Fairly simple to do. Here's a youtube video of it when we were debugging the setup.
One of the winter projects was the Air/Fuel sensor. From this we went up on the needle jet to richen the midrange - and also moved the accelerator pump to start coming in at 1/4 throttle to help as well.

This bike made 297 rear wheel hp back in 92, 1045 with 30# boost and the nitrous was not working. AMA horse power shootout at Daytona bike week.
This bike made 192 at the wheel, same year.
There was another Z1R turbo that made 170's but kept blowing the tire off on the dyno.
All of these are factory Z1R turbos! The big tire pink one ended up in West Virginia doing 1/8 mile dirt drags.

When you get the head dont wont worry about stainless valves and titanium stuff, get a good valve job done on it and buy good springs for it.
If you going to work on the ports i say spend time on the exhust side, thats where a turbo motor makes its money spinning the turbo.
The intake is force fed and will take care of itself.
Keep the stock camshafts that come with the head.
pay attention to the details just like assembling any other motor, welded crank/crank cap brace good studs .
No reason to use shim under buckets or any of that stuff
A properly built 1015-1075 turbo motor should have no problem handing a decently built streetable 1197 motor with carbs its ass, same thing for most sportbikes in a straight line blast if you can handle it.
