I checked my Haynes manual and it shows 8 inserted disks and 7 plain. I counted mine and it has 10 inserted disks and 9 plain disks. Anyone has any reason for this. Is this what the APE clutch disk from Z1 has. If this is what is from Z1, what is the thickness supposed to be ?

look at Z1 interprise under your bike model and it has steel plates and friction plates just add the number of them you need, its like page 2 or 3
sounds like you got too many plates going on in there.
just stick with STOCK set-up

and DONT forget NEW springs

ok page 3

7-steel plates @7.23 = 50.61

8-friction plates @4.82 = 38.56

5-springs @ total 13.82

so your total for plates only is =89.17 thats cheap considering the prices for newer bikes

so with plates and springs total 102.99 not bad

then you got all new stuff and good to go

just make sure you readjust your push rod set-up after this.

I'm just wondering why there were so many disks installed. I'll order the parts tomorrow.

Maybe the previous owner(s) thought more cltch plates were the "Hot" set up.

its done for a couple of reasons...none of which really work.....APE sells an extra plate kit.....just go with your stock set-up when re-ordering....Timebomb(tim) has many 1320 passes on built motors with a stock clutch set-up....the key is adjusting it right.....

Another option would be finding correct number of serviceable plates from those existing, and reassemble, along with existing springs. Then perform push rod adjustment, and re-test.

It's possible that a previous owner attempted to correct slippage by adding plates, when a simple push rod adjustment would have eliminated the slippage.

Good Fortune! :)

I may just do that. I might take the 8 thickest plates and put them in with 7 steel plates and adjust the pushrod to see what happens. I don't know how long these clutches have been in so I'm going to replace them when i get the clutches from Z1.

I just measured all 10 of the clutch disks and none of them meet the minumum of 1.27". I don't know what the previous owner did, but I am wondering if he ordered clutch disk and they were machined thinner so more disks were installed. I have order the disks from Z1 and they should be here in a couple of days.
