Have washed many motor parts in the dishwasher, which did a pretty good job.

Good Fortune! :)

So if you put the parts into the dishwasher did the heat not create instant surface rust? I remember last winter when I cleaned my cylinders I did the old toilet brush cleaning and they instantly got surface rust on them...

If you put the gears and shit into the dishwasher do they leave any funky smell or residue in there? I would love to do that, just don't wanna get caught! lol

can i bead blast my tranny gears?

you need to comepletely disasemble the gears from the shafts before doing that,id just clean em up in a solvent tank and check the bearings.
if you want to get really crazy have the gears shot peened on the sides after total disasembly, but thats really overkill for what your doing B)

Two words about flushing out oil passages...

Garden Hose!

Car wash hose is good for cleaning grunge but no good for flushing out the oil passages.

I have ritual of sorts that I go through and it takes considerable time to do it properly. It involves Simple Green & Brake Cleaner as well.

Any of you guys working on your own motors, do yourself a favor and spray out the bolt holes with brake cleaner using the plastic nozzle extension... Watch your eyes!

You should see the crud that comes out of cam tower bolt holes especially ;)

bore brushes, lots of cans of brake clean and several rolls of white toilet paper are the best supplies ive ever found for the final cleaning before assembling a motor.
keep scrubbing down the inside of those cases with toilet paper after spraying with carb cleaner till no more black crud shows up,same with sleeves before installing block over pistons B)
