i took the oil pan off. some small metal, but less than i thought. i found a piece of rubber....can you identify it?

cam chain tensioner/idler part

That looks like the rubber damper from the tensioner idler wheel. Most likely it was dropped in during assembly. It is not worth pulling the engine apart to pull out and it is a cheap part just to put in another one. What you found in the oil pan is all normal and for all practical purposes the engine is spotless inside.

ok so new piston rings, what should i do with my sleeves? 2 comes out a little, and 4 comes right out? find a set of jugs at the bike salvage, or buy larger sleeves?

then besides the rings, ill send the head out and have larry do a valve job.

You can buy those blocks on eBay for next to nothing. There are at least four sets on eBay right now between $50-$100. Any 1000 cylinder block from 1977-80 will fit.

i told you how to put the sleeves back in.
after you button up the top end they won't move anymore.

"to sink the sleeves back in the block go buy a cookie sheet, heat your oven to 400 degrees, flip the block over on the sheet and in about 15-20 minutes it will expand and the sleeve will fall into place. then just set it flush while still warm."
