Come on guys. Give this guy a brake. Let's help him fix this and lets cut out our usual sidetracks. Yesterday there were four cylinder units on eBay for $100 or less. Today there is only one and it has broken fins. If I find a set on there I will post it here.

I stayed out of this post as long as I could... WTF is all I can think of any longer...

Joe, Seriously speaking, not trying to insult you here but other then the 200 replies mentioning read the manual... I'm giving you the best advice anyone can give you right now...

Follow the link & download the Z1(900cc) OEM service manual... For the most part, it's 90% the same as the '76 KZ900, '77/78 KZ1000... A considerable amount of these engine and electrical components are interchangeable.

The ignition timing, valve clearances, timing chain to camshaft etc... are pretty much the same at least in procedure and configurations. You already have the electrical diagram I posted for your KZ...

Download, Read & Study it...
kzrider.com/index.php?option=com_docman&...d&gid=434&Itemid=108

Now after reading all this... :S ... here's the best advice anyone could provide you based on your experience, lack of tools and resistance to research and study the freaking manuals...

OK, you ready... Here it is....

STOP working on this KZ1000 for the time being and put her away for now.... Find/buy yourself a running 77/78 KZ1000. Hell even a 76 KZ900 for that matter.... You can pick up a decent runner for $1k-$2k....;)

Buying this $300-$500 engine... Yeah it's a good deal for someone who knows WTF they're doing but.....
this engine would need to be gone through as well and you'd be right back at where you are now... Possibly the tranny gears, shift drum/shift forks are jacked up...

Then you still have electrical, suspension & braking to deal with all of which you don't seem to have the patience for yet....

This way you can learn what it is to own & take care of a 30 year old bike. It's not like new bikes where insert key and ride for 20K miles... Computer takes care of fuel system versus getting out a screw driver and adjusting your carbs due to elevation changes.

You have to adjust valve clearances every 4K miles minimum, hell I do mine every 2K as well as syncing my carbs. Why you ask... Cause I want my KZ finely tuned every time I ride her...

Start stock piling the required tools...
Metric wrenches 8mm - 17mm, 3/8ths & 1/2 drive deep well sockets, a DVM, an external tachometer, a set of vacuum gauges, a torque wrench etc....

Example: All the postings, pull this, do that, what next... No one mentioned to ya that a cylinder base gasket, head gasket and valve cover gasket price... Ready, there's A HUNSKIE ($100) right there... SInce you had to Borrow a $10 compression tester, you're not ready for this yet... Seriously, we've all been there, just not your time yet... Doesn't mean you can't still learn...

Timing chain components... $400 minimum to replace all components...

EI components... $250.

Head with new valves, springs, guides, seals and P&P... $700 minimum... Sure you can probably get it done cheap by clean up and minor valve job... Better yet, LArry is offering fully restored heads now... Already gone through and rebuilt... Hmmm, which way to go I wonder...;)

BTW, are you guys kidding me informing Joe to do his own lapping?

New camshafts if desired extra spunk $450...

New cylinder (already bored, pistons, pins, gasket) 1075 kit $700 plus...

Rebuild carb kits $40 each = $160.
New carbs $700 plus.

New Exhaust... Go ebay used beat up or new... $100 to $500/700

Tires $250 plus.

Chain and sprockets $200....

See, that's the difference between a biker and a rider... A rider does just that, rides... A biker treats his bike as a fine women... Knows what turns her on, what makes her tick, what pisses her off, how to take care of her so she's smoking hot every time you take her out.... You treat her right and she'll love ya all the better...;)

And for KZ Gods sake... chill out on the weed while working on her... Otherwise you'll end up with exactly as you have... a big pile of worthless crap... It's not the way to go about it...

So, your call, digest this info or inform me to go pound sand, I don't give a rats ass either way...

If you require a manual for this bike, I have an extra OE Kawasaki manual for the A1. It would be virtually identical with the exception of the front brake position and the carburetors. If you are interested PM me and let me know.

Go look at that 900 Ninja and take it for a ride. I'd love to pick that up.

The 83 LTD sure looks dam good and probably lives up to the advertising. Only drawback there is shaft drive. But you might not see that as a drawback.

Do not use a cylinder block that has a loose sleeve. It can over heat during operation. It is correct that once the unit is assembled and torqued down between the head and the cases the sleeves will no longer move in the block, but the aluminum block will expand more than the steel sleeves and create a gap between the sleeve wall and the finned block. This will cause erratic and uneven heat dissipation. This is not an ideal situation for a street bike.

uh,depends on how loose it is guys!
ive seen plenty of street bikes with slightly loose sleeves,as long as it doesnt rock in the bore
