Just for your information, splitting the cases on a Z motor is less complicated than taking the top end off.

i was told that when you split a case the likelyness of it leaking is high.

If the comps are good, and you can verify that, I don't think $300 is out of line for a complete Z1 engine. Just don't make any irreversable decisions when emotional. It may be frustrating now, but if you can hang in there. This "little" project will impact your life positively in more ways than one.

Seriously, splitting the cases IS simpler than removing the top end, but I think a compete resurected engine would be best for your sanity Joe ;)

I believe all the 900 (903cc) motors were the same. A Z1 motor is a Z1 motor because it came off of a Z1 bike. My Kz900 motor has the same crank, pistons, cylinders, head, etc. There were some minor differences, carbs went from 28mm to 26mm (and I'm told got easier to work with), automatic chain oiler, and a few others beyond just the appearance of the bikes. There's a model history section on this site if you poke around a little.

Honestly, in '74, I don't know if they had separated the Z1 and Kz900. I believe if the engine serial # starts with Z1, then it's at least a Z1 case  Other than that, the only difference I know of is the crank.

Negative - the Kz900 motors all start with similar serials (Z1E). The engines are basically identical, including the crank. Wasn't until the Kz1000 that the crank was beefed up.
