If you think it's just the Hurley riders you are sadly mistaken. There are plenty of groups that wear uniforms and dress to impress. I've seen plenty or racing leathers on newbs that can't change a spark plug or couldn't tell you what an apex is. Even the shorts and sandals crowd is a fashion statement. Certain types are driven to certain bikes. Tell me that all Hurley riders are buttwipes and I'll introduce you to a group of vets that have done more community service than most. They are all Hurley riders and as proud of their bikes as I am of ours. Sure there is prejudice enough on all sides to go around and it's not pretty. I wave and smile if I get a wave back. If I don;t get a wave back and I know they saw me I hope they get no nooky for a month or 2 if I had a bad day. I have to admit I didn't know about the jeep thing.

I never meant all. And it is all in good fun. I fall into The Older Guy on an Old KZ Catagorie. You know Grey Hair, reliving his youth on a vintage bike, cracking the throttle on the way past the Harley Shop, and wearing a Helmet because I promised my Wife I would. I am sure the Harley Riders have a chuckle at me as well. I certainly hope they do...Russ

we are all a bunch of a-holes :)
when i worked at the harley dealer it was the same way, lotsa girls selling clothes and just a few guys in the back fixing bikes. it was fun in the back picking on some of the bikes and customers. i know we shouldn't have but some of the guys you describe seeing are even funnier in person and just try and talk to them! much less work on their bike.
seriously i love my HD but dont judge me because of other, please

Interesting phenomenon that I've noticed is that if I meet any of the locals on their HOGs that I'm as invisible as as if they were driving a cage. Out on the highway I get lots of waves from riders.

As for the rest of it, I coined the term "Costume and chrome crowd" to describe it. Then there are those who live the "lifestyle" all the time, who come to work in full regalia--bandana, vest, beard, dangly things off the belt, the whole visual impact and they're going to be in a train cab for the next 8 to 12 hours. The ones that really crack me up have all manner of trinkets and clothes with the bar and shield and no bike. Eh? But it's the clone riders who try to dress and act BA that must get in the craw of the Faithful.

At least it's fun to be on the sideline with no emotional involvement either way. P.T. Barnum would marvel at the power of branding.

Murphys corollary: Wrenching is the result of time spent riding.

i love all motorcycles and i can find something good to say about any of them pretty much. of course i have my favorites kz's being no1,gs suzi's no2 but believe it or not no3 on my list is the mid 90's evo fxrs h-d i absolutly love those bikes and the great thing about them is nobody knows how much fun they can be so one of these fine day's i'll be getting one for myself. probably the only h-d i'll ever own. every thing else has stupid forward controls. but if yopu h-d riders are funny you ought to try working at a b.m.w shop for awhile man you wouldn't believe some of the foolishness that go's on there.

Even here in Vermont we have a large population of those "Ride to Pretend - Pretend to Ride" types. But I will agree with timebomb, a few years ago they had a BMW national event near where I live. I have never in my life met a more arrogant bunch of anal pores in my life. At least some Harley riders will talk. And yes I wave. I'm out riding and having fun. I want to acknowledge that I understand how the other rider might be feeling. If they are to afraid to let go of the handlebars, well maybe they'll learn someday. B)

I've been an H-D owner since 1972 and Z-1 worshiper since 1975. I guess I am the type who can find something to like about anything with 2 wheels. I love both of my current scooters. Couldn't be more different, but both are a hoot. I do shake my dome, though, at the newfound lifestyle many of these recent (anything since the advent of the Evo in the early 80s in my book) American Iron affacionados embrace. What a crock. Motorcycling is about riding (and keeping them running) motorcycles, not about making fashion and lifetyle statements. Fashion and lifestyle have there place, but centering them around a mechanical air pump mounted to a collection of steel (or other choice of metal these days) tubing is strange in my book. Real strange.
