Have you heard of S & K Racing in Dayton? This guy.....scott is big time old school KZ, and does great machine, port work.

I've heard of S&k but I don't have any experience with them. Good to hear about a local with a good rep.

Do the cafe racer! I don't like the headlight shroud but other than that its a solid bike.I wouldn't really keep the shroud, i'd gut it for the complete cafe racer look.

He has done work for me, a 1075, 1105 and head work. He has a current dyno also. I would recommend him. He is a retired KZ platform drag racer. He cut his teeth on KZ. Held some national records in the day also.

Good for you, mate: it's your bike, your vision, and your money. Personally, I'd have gone with something worth a bit less as a starting point for a project, but hey - go for it ! My personal opinion, there's not a bike ever made that I wouldn't modify and try to improve in my own way - that said, the advice earlier about not doing anything irreversible is, from a financial perspective at least, a smart one. As for rarity, please someone feel free to correct me, but I always understood that the R1 & 2 were basically a cosmetic upgrade on the J, other than the pipe and shocks.

Cheers,
Brian

It's more than cosmetics. Take a look at the article below, Notice the steering geometry (rake etc.), seating position, etc. was modified on the ELR. It was no S1, but it was not just lipstick on a J. Ed

there's no point in insulting or even disagreeing with the guy, it'll just scare off a new member.

No point in disagreeing? New to the internet, are you? :P Disagreement is how progress is made! Would you prefer we all go along to get along, like meek little obedient lemmings? "Oh, don't say anything to the new guy, you might insult him!" He's insulted a lot of people by doing what he did to a rare and expensive bike that most of us here lust after. You don't put a lift kit and mud tires on a Ferrari! If you do, or if you support that sort of thing, that makes you an @$$4073.
This community has every right to voice it's opinion on the matter, and there's not much use in whinging about it.

If he did it to a Ferarri Dino no one would complain. They would just want to know why he bought a dino.

While I find myself stunned by his decision, it is not my bike, it is his. Let his do as he wishes. It is too late anyway, so what the heck.
