smack it with a soft faced hammer and look for a crack to appear around where they are joined.it usually turns blue when it starts getting close.i am fortunate i just chuck them in the lathe and just cut the weld out and bevel at the same time.

You're using the stock neck/stem, right? If so you will need the other half of the tapered roller bearings (look like metal rings that fit the bearings on the stem).

Part of it. There are two pieces to a tapered bearing...the bearing and the ring.

There is also a grease seal you will need - maybe that's what those two pieces are, hard for me to tell.
