I got the bottom case blasted, cleaned and ready for paint today.

Here's another one for you guys: The small gear next to the clutch has odd looking wear marks on the faces of the teeth. Don't know if this is a problem or not.

This pic is for reference. The next 2 are close ups of the teeth. What do you think? Just some extra oil clearance? ;)

Another question: This pin holding the shift spring looks a bit flimsy. I noticed it's slightly bent towards the spring. is this a problem area? it still works and the pin is in solidly, so not a problem now, just wondering if I should do something preventative.

i rely don't think there's anything to worry about.
if u look at the base of the teeth (gear) the part that is not warn, it seems to have a course texture. it may just be that this texture has naturally warn into this line type pattern.
as for the spring pin. u could likely just tap it back straight with a punch and hammer. there is actually a spec for the springs free length . this will tell u if it has stretched and if replacement is necessary.
there is also a back lash spec in the manual for the gears. u will need a dial indicator for that, which i think u have used for the valve play ? the gears are pretty tough. the parts that seem to fail most often are the shift forks. they tend to get bent and warn, so take a close look at them. there will be a wear spec in the manual for there faces as well.

That little pin holding the spring was similarly bent on my bike. As I have a tendency of breaking such things by trying to straightening them, I decided to leave it alone. Discretion is the better part of valor as they say.

Did the trans make any noise before? If not, I wouldn't worry about those gears? Might check the backlash per the manual to make sure.

glad 2 hear someone else has the same bent pin. I thought of straightening and had the same thought about breaking it or loosening it, so I have'nt done anything to it.

Trans has always shifted fine and no noises. So the texture on the gears can just be "oil clearance" I think ;)

I think I'm going to replace all the springs if they're reasonably priced. Just seems like good prevention. Thanks for the tip on backlash. I will look at the book again. The shift forks look as if they have no wear at all. Strange. I only looked quickly tho, haven't really inspected them closely yet.

Here's the bottom case half with iron colored Duplicolor. The pic looks a bit silver, but it's not, it's darker and looks great.

This is my engine!
I decided to spread out all the engine parts so I can see everything while I do more inspecting and ordering of parts.
You also get to admire my ZR-7s in the background B)

This is the countershaft bearing, closest to the sprocket. I've never seen gaps like that in races before...??? They kinda look machined so I guess that's normal?

I'm planning to replace the countershaft bearing anyway, so it doesn't matter if that's normal or not. I just thought it's weird.

The big bearing behind the clutch has a tiny bit of play if I "twist" it... not sure how to say it. I can't feel any axial or radial play, but it will "wobble" just a bit if you get what I mean. Is it OK?

Who sells a cam chain as a continuous loop? Z1 makes you mess with master link and press.

Kawasaki.com shows cam chain part no. 21070-003 as an "active" part.
May be relatively expensive.

Nelson, I ordered the Tsubaki cam chain from Z1, and it came in as a continuous chain. IIRC when I ordered on the phone, Jeff told me that they sell the links but you have to separate the chain if you want to use the link. You may want to call and confirm that information, but calling Z1E is never a chore.

the countershaft bearing is made with those notches.

the bearing behind the clutch should be a double row bearing, should prolly last forever.

but you are there right now and

www.kzzone.com/trans.html

it is probably cheap insurance and peice of mind,if you are worried at all.
