i wonder if it could be something related to the clutch basket?
there are springs in the back of the basket that can break.

That crossed my mind since the clutch seems weak. I haven't been into one of these engines yet but I think that is going to be the first place I dive into. Any special tools needed? Also which clutch is better the one with 5 springs or 6? I have both, one from an 81 LTD and one from a 83 GPZ.

Lookin' good. I saw your handlebar grips and was thinking of getting same for my Kaw. How do you like them and what make bar ends did you go with?
Thanks much,
Ken

I splurged on a set of rizoma's. I like that they are all aluminum and they are great quality but I don't think they are worth what they charge for them. I haven't bought any bar ends yet, still looking. If I had to do it over again I think I would have bought a cheap ebay set before I tried these.

i hesitated to day anything earlier because i was hoping it would be something else.
and it may still be.
but,
i had a cage come apart on my output shaft bearing on my 80 z1r
and when the bearings roll over the top it gives this intermittant clicking sound.
i could roll my transmission through buy hand and hear it.
it still had the right amount of balls but it would let em all bunch up,which in turn gave the output shaft enough slack to jump around and cause some pretty violent reactions ion my drive line.
being as how i am posting pics here is the bottom end on my 80 all laid open.
and it may still be.

Thanks for posting that Leon. That could definitly be what it is. Did you have any problems shifting at all? Mine shifts fine but a little harsh.
That last picture is almost as good as a service manual. You really get to see how everyting works togther. I've got a chance to pick up a complete 84 gpz1100 so I might just swap engines and sell the other parts I've been collecting. What do you think a complete GPZ1100 engine is worth with high mileage?

i really didn't have much trouble shifting.
but if i was hammering it and shifted into second it would get a really violent jerking in the driveline where i would just back out and easily shift up a gear and be cool.
until i forgoot and done it again :pinch: .
value on the gpz motor i would say between $300.00 and $500.00 no more than $700.00

Well, looks like ive got a fix for my tranny noise. Im taking the engine out of the GPZ and putting into my 81 KZ.
Got lucky, came with some 33mm smoothbores to boot!
everyting but the engine is up for sale on the GPZ. I might even sell the smoothbores. Make offers. Bike has good Georgia title.
