Project 81 KZ11R

28 Jun 2010 03:31 - 28 Jun 2010 03:58
#378697
I just bought an 81 kz1000 with a blown engine and here are the plans for it.

81 kz1000 frame
81 kz1000 LTD tank
82 spectra 1100 engine ( will have to change to chain drive )
Would like to add turbo if I can find the parts
kz900 tail
92 gsxr1100 swingarm monoshock (+2" longer than stock arm)
03 sv1000 monoshock
01 gsxr 1000 6" rear strait spoke wheel ( anyone know if this can be make to fit with the swingarm I have?) I know the axle is different 20mm vs 28mm for the 01 wheel

GPZ EFI throttle bodies with microsquirt or Megasquirt II

Frame, tank and tail black and all aluminum, engine polished.

The first problem I have run into is mounting the swingarm. The KZ pivot bolt is 16mm and the one for the 92 GSXR swingarm is 20mm. What are others doing to make up for the difference? I read the bearings for the 86/87 gsxr swingarm are 17mm ID is this a solution?

I believe the general solution to the difference in pivot bolt diameter is to fabricate a sleeve and use the stock pivot bolt. Perhaps someone that has done it that way will chime in. I had to install new pivot bushings and use the transplant pivot bolt, but I had much more complex issues to deal with. But of course, is an option.

You've got quite a big project planned, it'll be great when you finish it, good luck!

It should take you to page two of my build thread. Towards the bottom of page two it shows the bushings that I made to adapt the kz swingarm pivot to the GSXR swingarm bearings. I actually turned the bushings on a lathe at work. If you don't have a way to get a machine shop to make bushings, then you should look through Old Man Rock's build thread. He made a bushing from a piece of pipe or something like that. Let me know if you need measurements to the bushing. Mine is apart right now so I could still measure it.

It looks like u are of to the races. i used a zrx arm and had a bronse sleeve made. actualy a 3pc to make it easier to drill out the full lenghth.

Thanks for the info mark1122. Funny thing is the old gsxr pivot has just about the same inside diameter as the kz1000 outer diameter. I cut it to the proper length and it seems to fit pretty good. I do need the make a spacer to take up some side to side room as the gsxr swingaxle is smaller than the frame. I'll have to wait and do that after I get the engine in to see how well the sprockets line up. Right now it has a 200 tire on a 6 in rim. Hope it is going to fit.

What kid of seat is that on your bike. Looks like one from a zrx

Yes thats right . i took the foam and skin from a zrx and put it on my pan. i had a local fellow add a piece of material to the side to complete it. the zrx seat has a rise at the rear bottom and the kz is flat across the bottom. looking from the side. there is a pic on pg 3 of my build.
the only difficulty fitting a 200 tire is getting it aligned with the front tire and drive sprocket. if u aren't running it seriously on a rd race track, dont be afraid to offset the rim. you wont notice it . i run mine offset a bit and dont notice it at track days. of course u wouldnt use a 200 for a serious track bike anyways. lol

I know its been a while but do you still have the '92 Gsxr arm? If so, what do you want for it?

Doug, I'll take 75 + shipping for just the arm, that is what I have in it.

I think the foot pegs and rear brakes are going to be the hardest part of this project. Anyone ever mount 78-79 ltd footpegs to a 81 ltd frame? It looks like they will put the pegs in just about the right place.
