That's a nice little detail, thanks for the feedback as well. Do you have a baffle installed in that pipe? Megs are LOUD.

Jack, can u elaborate on the Dencos performance? have u tried it back to back with any others? Like a Kerker or Yosh? Just trying to get a good comparison.
does it pull harder at lower rpms and die off sooner??

Quick edit: head pipes are 1.5" OD not ID. Baffle is the original Denco end cap welded to a local exhaust shop's handywork, no packing and yes it's loud but not obnoxious.

I have another 4-1 pipe made by old friend Joe Carron-think Gary Wolf style with an aluminum can. The Denco pipe has better mid range by my seat of the pants dyno, never A/B'd them at the track.

When u say head pipes , do u mean the 4 primaries? above u said the collector was 1.5" also.
in the pic, the collector looks bigger than each primary. is it just deceiving in the pic?

Back to topic... Picked up a new starter and fit it. Read somewhere on this forum the later model GPZ/J starter bolts in and are stronger - 4 brush instead of 2 brush. Haven't spun it up yet but can report yes, it does bolt straight in. The splines are a bit longer but there is plenty of room inside the cover. It's also at least a pound lighter than the old brick... sweet. Put the starter in when it was still on the ground, sitting on a creeper stool and the bum knee was protesting... Put the bike on a table today, now I can finish up the wiring. Much better this way. I ran 6 gauge wire to the solenoid (battery and solenoid under the seat hump)and the same for ground wire to the cases. Rest of the wiring should be fairly straight forward.

The fairing is a little closer to getting done, just got back to the plug, will have some pics soon!

I also got shipping notification from emachineshop who machined the custom rotor carriers I designed, they should arrive next week. I got all new NAS hardware, had the square spacers nickel plated and got the rotors turned. A bit nervous to see if it's all gonna fit together. Moment of truth next week!

Here's a picture of the fairing plug. We're shortening the dash to clear the big master cylinder and the tachometer.

It's coming together. Gotta trim some more and finish all the edges before we can make a mold.

I'm new to this forum, but I've read through this thread twice already. It is the inspiration for my (hopefully) upcoming build. I'd love to turn my KZ650 into a cafe racer. If it turns out half as nice as this bike, I'll be thrilled. Keep up the great work.

Why thank you, and welcome! The KZ650 is a great platform for a cafe and there are quite a few modified ones on this site.
