I picked up a cheap HF welder on CL for $30. After using my neighbor's mig off and on the past three years I was disgusted. You have to have the steady hands of a surgeon. The rod kept sticking but I found ones that will work. I'm also using thinner rods than what's called for. I'm practicing but I think I'll wait until I can afford to drop $500 on a mig so I can gusset my frame. We'll see.

Stick welding is one of the hardest to learn. What one you can handle it, MIG will me a piece of cake.

I was a line welder for three years in my 20's. Mostly brazing and nickle/silver sweat soldering. Made finish welder the last year. I've stick welded so many times over the last 30 years I can't remember. Blown more than my share of holes. This little thing is a POS. I was spoiled by Jeff's mig, that's what I want.

I've narrowed it down to 2. Either the Lincoln Electric SP-140T or the nearly Identical in function and specification, it even uses the same accessories and replacement parts, Longevity Migweld 140 which is almost half the price. It just depends on what the budget can bear right now, most likely the Longevity.

I won a Muzzy Titanium muffler on ebay, it's amazing how willing some are to take a lowball offer. It never hurts to ask. It has a mid pipe for a YZF-R1 so the welder will come in handy getting everything matched up. The next candidate for low ball was going to be a aluminum Muzzy off a ZX10R

So i made a pretty good deal with the manufacturer for the Longevity which includes the spool gun. I'm going to split the cost of the welder with my kid and I'll pay for the spool gun he's responsible for getting a tank and gas. I'm going to have get another tank and gas if i want to do aluminum.

I better study up on youtube etc. it's been a long time. I dug out my welding mask and my kid was dumbfounded that it wasn't a reactive type. The receipt was still with it. 2-13-93.

It's getting too nice out there! Which completely sucks since my handlebars haven't come in yet.

However, I did get a box full of parts which included a set of Spectre headlight mounts which will match my Specter headlight bucket. I'm going to use these to drop my headlight approx. 3/4" (18 mm). I'm going to go look for some useful hardware shortly. I'll post the results....if I'm successful. BTW this will allow me to drop my instrument cluster about another inch, give or take.

Done! I was actually able to drop it just over an inch.

Before and afters.

It is just a bit crude but I'm happy with the result. I will be able to drop the instruments another 1 1/4" I just now need to get the hardware for that. There wasn't readily available way to mount the blinkers so I'll have to get that figured out.

I've pretty much decided to install some sort of cowling, not a fairing just some thing to clean up the looks of the front something like this.

I can give some details if anyone is interested. In a nut shell I took the Spectre mounts chopped of the long ends. I Did a bit of fitting and relief cutting the bucket for the brake line, clamped down the top of the mounts and bolted everything back together. The triple clamp actually fits better now. Man! i really want to get those handlebars in.

The muffler came in and I spent half the night test fitting it. I'm going to get the end caps off to look at the baffles and see how hard its going to be to get the biggest dent out which will determine the exact positioning. I might even be able to put my center stand back on.

I have a few ideas about the front blinkers but I just haven't made a final decision. Of course i need to drop my instruments too.

I hope they call me on the handle bars today. :side:

Kind of looks like a scooter muffler, huh?

The problem is that it doesn't have a mid pipe. I've actually scraped it a few times and it has a flat spot now. I was actually just looking for a suitable pipe when I found the Muzzy. It's a bigger pipe so I might not need to fiddle with my jetting once it's on.

My welder is arriving today. I'm going to practice by building a fold up welding bench then get that sucker fitted.

We hooked up the welder and it is painfully clear I need practice. Even my kid had issues dealing with flux core instead of MIG. We'll get the hang of it soon enough.

I picked up the handle bars and the winner is...... Drag bars. They were actually the only ones I can fit the brake cylinder on. Even then, I'm going to have to reorient the brake line to clear the triple clamp to get the throttle properly positioned. The Clubman's looked pretty cool but I think they are just a hair too low and then they hit the tank . If I want to go that low I'll have to do clip-ons.

I knocked out a couple of spacers at work out of 3/4" aluminum rod. They work perfectly on the cluster. The radius is a perfect match to the attachment points on the triple clamp.

I think I have a temporary solution for the blinkers. I hope I can get everything going over the weekend.

what about this modified Z1R fairing? it will go with your 7" light and match the angular tank pretty nice. Airtech sells them.
