Hello
Do you prefer the Lucas Fuel additive to Seafoam?
Do you use Stabil additive in fuel in winter months?
It seems everybody has their favorite I guess.
Thanks!!

Thanks.

They will dissolve in Gas but it will take much longer plus the smell of the gas gets everywhere and it is long lingering. The Xylene or Toluene has non lingering vapors and both of these solvents have great benefits of their own, such as raising the Octane content.

I think the Lucas is a much better continuous use fuel additive than Seafoam. It is also much cheaper and has no solvents added. One 16 oz can of seafoam is about $8 around here and treats about 20 gallons. I can buy a Gallon of Lucas for $25 or a quart for $11. One quart treats about 125 Gallons of fuel. That is right and not a typo, "one hundred twenty five" Gallons. Because the Lucas will not evaporate anywhere as quickly as the seafoam it makes it a MUCH MUCH better combustion chamber and Valve cleaner than seafoam. I run the Lucas fuel Additive in every tank of gas I run in every vehicle I own. For this reason I buy it by the Gallon. It is added at a quantity of 2.5oz/10Gal gas. This means that a Gallon will treat about 500+Gal of gas. It also works as a gas stabilizer so no other product has to be added during storage. The Lucas product also acts as an upper lubricant and detonation inhibitor. The product has properties much more far ranging than the seafoam. I carry a bottle of it on my bike to add during fill-ups. One tank of fuel=1.25 oz Lucas.

So what quick and easy measurin device do you use ?
Mt bike is a 75 Z1-B stock gas tank,Suggestions for a quick and easy / accurate mixing? Some type of metal measuring spoon? Or?
Thanks Again

I carry this little bottle on my bike with one pre-measured amount always in it. For your bike I would add one OZ per full tank of gas. Which makes it just under 1/4oz per gallon. I than also carry an 8oz bottle under the seat along with this bottle. I personally reduce the stuff about 2:1 with Xylene because it is thick like 50w motor oil. The Xylene makes it easier to poor. The Xylene also has the side effect of slightly raising the octane rating of the gas. But in that small amount that is insignificant. i bought those bottles at McMaster-Carr. Item #2801T51

I would be surprised if you could not get those two. They are standard solvents. Do not use Acetone. That would be disastrous. Acetone will damage the seals in
the carburetors and the intake boots. If you have a sealer(liner) in the tank it will damage that. If you add too much Acetone to your fuel it will induce severe detonation.

Actually, a lot of people add acetone as it is hailed as a surfactant that will increase power from the gas. IMHO, that is pure BS but it is all over the internet and many people add it to the gas regularly. If added in very low concentration it does no harm. Many carb cleaner liquids and sprays have a lot of acetone in them because it dissolves gunk very well.

I have attempted this experiment also some years ago. It took four bottles of commercial octane booster to bring the gas back to a state where I did not think the head was going to blow off. The car knocked so bad that it was completely un-drivable. When I put in in the gas it was in a concentration of 1oz per gallon. That is less than 1%. It scared me so much that I will never attempt that again in any concentration. Even though now the ratios you see on the web are closer to about 500-600:1 that is about .05% and less I believe. I read this guys article and he seams to be very knowledgeable.

I tried acetone at a concentration of about 5 ounces to 12 gallons of gasoline which is 300/1 which is about 0.33%. Did nothing good or bad.

Interestingly, I also tried the platinum vapor injector sold by National Fuelsavers.com because it had a money back guarantee and was shocked to find out it did work for about a 10% increase in mileage on my old 1986 Dodge (carburetor engine). I was buddies with our staff scientist and nationally known author by the name of Robert Pease who put one on his old VW bug and was equally stunned to see his mileage go up 8%. He drove the same freeway to work, held at same speed, did the whole nine yards. Problem is, the platinum systems won't work on modern FI cars unless you can recalibrate the O2 control loop or it will read the increase in combustion efficiency (less unburned fuel) as a lean condition and rich it up which cancels out the gains. I tried it on my wife's FI Saturn and it had no gain.

Commercial octane booster is really weak. A bottle of it only raises the octane about 0.4 point if added to a typical tank of gas as I recall. The only effective octane booster is the Octane Supreme 130 which has tetraethyl lead in it. You can easily jack the octane up ten points with that stuff.

There are some out there that are actually good now. Some can raise the octane as much as three full #s not points because one octane point is 1/10 of one #. That is actually why it is called a point as in point one or point five. so thirty points are three #s. They are sold as for "off road use" This is one of the best web sights which I have found that explains why you should NOT run a fuel with higher octane than the engine is designed for.

I use both the NOS and the Lucas they are both quite good.

Actually, quoting from the article it says:

As with almost all of the boosters tested, more than one bottle is needed to raise the octane of an entire tank any significant amount. /// To boost to 98 AKI from 93 on most tanks would require over 6 bottles.

That gets really pricey in a hurry. IMHO, that's not very good or practical. One 12 ounce bottle in with 14 gallons of gas is a dilution of about 1/150. To get significant gains it has to be a lot more.

The good one is Lucas:

To date Lucas octane booster is the only booster tested that had significant results with only one bottle in the tank. One bottle is enough to make 10 gallons of 96.6 octane out of 93.

I am wondering why you don't go to the original source for octane: tetraethyl lead. If this is for off road/motorcycle use and no cat converter is involved, that's the way to go.

You can get Octane Supreme 130 for about $10/quart which works out to ballpark of about 30 cents per ounce.

But, the octane boost is impressive: at a ratio of two ounces booster per gallon of gas, you get an octane boost of about six numbers. For a ten gallon tank, 20 ounces at 30 cents an ounce is $6 to get up six numbers on octane.
