Update.
In the end I went back from disassembling the head to check everything again and fit original Kawasaki camshaft bearings.
I made sure they rotated freely, and replaced the chain tensioner with an APE one.
Also make sure the valve clearance is set as close to 0.15mm as possible.
I've been on the bike for about 160 kilometers and I'm surprised by the power it has now, the smoke is already diminishing.

Hello everyone.
After 250 kilometers I wanted to check the valve clearance, and found that almost all but three shims were damaged.
My thought is that they are of poor quality, the worst thing is that I bought more than 40 to play with the measurements.
What do you think?

I am interested to see what the guys who know these engines far better than me think, looking at the lobes and bearing journals they do look (to me at least) like they have been getting hot (lack of lubrication) was there plenty of oil in the head when you opened it up and was the chain "wet" with oil?
What crankcase studs are you using?

Re: Has anyone had problems with new camshaft bearings?
21 Jun 2023 13:24I think the oil rises normally, when I opened everything it looked fine, the crankcase studs are the original ones, I keep the oil at a high level.I am interested to see what the guys who know these engines far better than me think, looking at the lobes and bearing journals they do look (to me at least) like they have been getting hot (lack of lubrication) was there plenty of oil in the head when you opened it up and was the chain "wet" with oil?

So what brand were the shims. Those lobes look worn to me. Have you measured them. Never seen shims with those marks. Doesn't look like much oil sitting in that bucket area.
Also what year is your engine those cam caps look like KZ1000 caps.

21 Jun 2023 14:00I don't know what brand the shims are, I bought them at Z1E, just like the camshaft bearings. So what brand were the shims. Those lobes look worn to me. Have you measured them. Never seen shims with those marks. Doesn't look like much oil sitting in that bucket area.

The lobes were fine.

Re: Has anyone had problems with new camshaft bearings?
21 Jun 2023 15:53The exhaust side has always had that color, I bought seven shims, apparently Japanese K&L, these days I test the bike, the weather doesn't help.Looks like the exhaust side is getting hot. Same shims?

My old head looked like that. Bad valve guide seals. Those shims suggest an oiling problem.

Measure your shims to see if they are still at the intended thickness.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.
