Andrew from IMD replied right away on a Saturday evening. These guys are good!

Answer was:

Hello thank you for your email
Our IMD are manufactured to the same specifications as OE Kawasaki parts, so skimming the cyl head is not necessary.

And then, Adrian replied too:

It will be correct if you rebore & hone the cylinders
Best regards & happy new year
Adrian

All in all... Way to go!

What piston did he recommend? I’m on their website, I find only one kit, std compression, .05mm over. Do the offer higher compression?

All their kits are OEM spec.
They don't do high comp performance pistons but cater for stock rebuilds and stock or oversize cast pistons as original that are usually discontinued by the original manufacturer.

and no other witness marks evident on the crown, bore or head which would have been unavoidably made by a foreign object it was certainly solely the result of detonation/overheating caused by a very weak mixture .

Totally agree with zed1015 on the detonation/preignition diagnosis.  And, here's a pic illustrating mechanical damage (vs heat damage) to piston crowns caused by a broken valve head, in both cases, bouncing around the combustion chamber.  A KZ900 piston on the left and a KZ1000 on the right.  Gruesome stuff.  Not from any of my motors, fortunately.  In both cases, these came from stock motors that were dragraced, as is, without any prior prep (such as fresh valve springs  ).  Take a shortcut and you do so at your own peril.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Oh well... it´s been a while since I updated last time. Work gets into my bike rebuilding time... not good. Well; work and dealing with the Spanish customs, a true source of pain and suffering, as @wookie58 can definitely confirm.

In any case; the bike is officially, as of today, completely dismantled. I just opened the cases, and all parts will be now delivered to different suppliers for work:

- Frame: Off to powdercoating in satin black
- Engine cases: Off to a vapour blasting joint for cleaning
- Bodywork: Off to new paint
- Chrome: Off to chroming!

I took off the pan, and found substantial chunks of the piston down there. That was the moment I decided to split the cases.

All bolts have come out well, with quite a large number of them with a lot of rust and even "aluminum oxide" grey dust. Only one has broken, but should not be too much trouble to take out. You can see it in one of the attached pics.

When opening the cases, several things. I´´m posting the pics, and would love to read your feedback on them.

The good: Overall smooth movement of all parts. Gears have no marks or broken teeth
The bad: Some crankshaft parts have some superficial scoring. IT´s really superficial, so I believe some professional polishing should be OK
The ugly: Some of the crankshaft thrust bearings have either scoring, or what looks like slight corrosion

Please, take a look at the pics. The place I will be taking the head for the valve job and head job are crankshaft specialists as well; so I will end up taking the entire thing there

Thanks a lot in advance!

Have been browsing CMSNL.com for a while, and cannot see any crankshaft washers available. Perhaps I´m using the wrong name, but even the pictures don´t show the part.

Do you guys know if these are available anywhere?

The marks on the crank journals are normal. On mine there was signs of the crank walking. You could hear it at low idle. I took a punch and put three spaced dimples in one side of each one. Didn't hear that noise again. In your case I don't think you should worry about it.
