It's still a baby with that mileage. Look in your Kawasaki Service Manual; there you will find instructions on how to measure the cam chain to see if it is still within the service limits. That's how you determine if you need to replace it.

I'm betting you will find it is perfectly fine. The teeth on the sprockets in the cam chain assembly don't wear like the drive chain sprockets because they are always running with lots of oil on them. What generally happens to the cam chain sprockets is that the rubberized part deteriorates even though the teeth are still like new, and this causes slop in the sprockets. So normally the chain is still ok since the teeth haven't worn and so haven't damaged it. Ed

With 30.000 miles I decided to leave my cam chain and sprockets alone too and only replaced the rubber parts......

Ordered everything I needed today!!!

I ordered the most of my Cam chain idler needs directly from Liska Racing. I asked a few questions before ordering and YES the "Heavy Duty Cam Chain Idler" sprockets they carry are compatible with the kz650. I also ordered their KZ650 Top Idler Assembly and Cam Chain Tensioner Assembly for Kawasaki KZ 650. Unfortunately they told me that the billet spacer blocks were not compatible with the kz650. I instead found some NOS rubber dampers on ebay for $5 each. I got my rubber roller, o-rings and other needs from Z1 and ordered my Piston rings and clips from MTC. It was an expensive day but I look forward to having a solid top end. Thank you guys for all your help! I'm really grateful this forum exists to educate beginners like myself.

Dealt with old parts for too long. This time I wouldn't do anything until I got the best. Another reason it took 15 years.
You won't regret it. B)

Dirtyhands wrote: Oh man, they had to be their most expensive line too. $120 for a new set of rings, It stings a bit but I'll be happier in the long run I guess.

My four piston ring set was $112.00 plus shipping.
