Why is the tensioner still in?
Completely remove this and install this last thus giving all your timing chain slack up for camshafts and timing components once the head is place.....

it looks like it's pulled out all the way, would that not be fine?

No thanks, I'd remove all chain tension variables as depicted in the OEM manual is the way I'd go...

did a little clean-up and superglued the shaved down dampers on the shafts.....as peviously mentioned, new liska stuff, new shafts, and new dampers......got a wiseco 1075 gasket.....just have to fill the groove and clean up a little more.....the good thing about winter is you are not on a schedule.....go out and work when ya have the time and feel so inclined. ....ready to go when head gets back.... quote]

Keith, gluing them into place over the flat spot on gear shafts, yup, get that but as Mark caught, these normally ride in height just over the deck height and will compress tightly into place once the head is installed and torqued down thus securely seating your two idler gears in place....
Seriously, way to go Mark... Dig it...

Good catch Mark....

I could be off the mark here, but I think what Mark was asking is why would he shave the dampeners? It must be something you 1000cc guys do because I have never heard of shaving the dampeners on the 650's. The clymer manual I have recommends the superglue trick (which keeps the dampeners from ending up in your oil pan when you put the head on) but why shave them?

bought it because I was told it would never run again...I like to prove people wrong.

But what it does do is provide some possibilities in how his timing chain jumped of idler/tensioner gears in the first place... May have led to why his problem occurred due to the idler pins not being held in place properly thus providing the idler gears vertical bouncing in their positions...
Keith, myself & others have been on PM's on this and just couldn't understand how the hell this was possible with a properly tensioned chain...
Brings up another thought.... Keith, when you opened her up, where the dampers still in place?
If not, this also provides the timing component gears to move horizontally in their positions....
The puzzle pieces are starting to fall into place... Hmmm....
