Tore it down a bit....... was created by keith1
well, in light of the recent crop dusting on cold start-ups as soon as oil pressure comes up and the amount of metal stuck to drain plug magnet( a lot more than i m comfortable with), i spent a couple hours after work and pulled head...no surprises and i didnt find any blatant reasons....
a couple questions though.....is it normal for head to be real dark near exhaust cams and the whole garage stinks of rancid oil....? also i have a valve that looks "wet"...i ll post up some pics.....let me know if you see anything....thanks

From what I can see, it looks pretty good. Unless thats rust in there...

If rust, then you should try to take some longer trips with the bike more frequently, so the oil can get hot enough to boil out all the moisture.

The shiny valve is likely oil that has leaked past the seals. Not uncommon with the regular seals and new oils when they get hot.

Cheers.

i took a repeak......not rust, just discoloration...due to my own stupidity and rookie mistake, i ran this motor for quite a while with the cams out of phase...they were correct in relation to each other, but i was off a bit on the exhaust cam mark.....it should have been right at head level and it was about a half an inch higher...bike surprisingly went down the road well, but would nt idle for crap.....hence my schooling on vm26, vm28 bs34, 29 mm smoothbores.....i learned a lot about jetting and rebuilding and about people's character.......its all part of the learning curve......thanks for the input.....

i m gonna give the head a good lookthrough....i suspect problem is in there.....i dont want to throw any more money at this bike, but if i have to redo head , larry is going through it and its getting a mild port job......
