KZ900: Value of this bike

Go to your state DMV site and search a little bit to find info, they tend to have a packet on their of forms to print out (police inspection, bill of sale, etc that you fill out and submit to them, or you may have to go in front of a judge and petition for a title. Either was is suprisingly cheap (at least in Indiana, $40 for the packet $300 for the judge)

Or if you have a friend in a more lax title state you can get a hand from them that way.

After a bit of research, I don't think getting a title in MA is an option. You need a title or need to have purchased the bike from a non title state, posses a bill of sale and the previous registration.

I have bill of sale from MA, which is useless.

Some states have a builders title/permit from the DMV for salvaged frames etc. I went through that here in Cali..........................................Mike

As stated before, Vermont may be your best option.

The thing is, the fact that it is from out of state helps you in this case. The only thing you need is a bill of sale. Does not have to be notarized. You also need to fill out this form along with the proper fees and a have a local county sheriff come out to verify the serial number (not stolen) and confirm the odometer reading. Your NJ DMV may have some forms for the odometer and serial number to have ready and pre-filled before the sheriff gets there. Can you get a bill of sale from the person you purchased it from, he had possession of the bike so legally that is the current owner. Short of any claims on the bike.
Going the NJ DMV route may result in you losing the bike, if a prior owner is contacted and decides he wants the bike. And then you may be legally out of the money you paid for it. Not very likely, but possible. It is also more expensive and to me it is jumping through a lot of hoops. Wish you luck with everything.

I am in a trail of 3 bills of sale and not sure I want to create a fourth, which is what I would need to do.

I'd say it was well worth it.

The only bill of sale you need is the one from MA. Along with filling out the following form ( Vermont DMV Form ) and the other two items mentioned from the Sheriff (odometer reading and serial number check). Remember, you do not do the Vermont process in person. Won't have to step foot in the state and you don't have to be a resident. All done by mail. And in two weeks you will have a registration and plates (which can then use to get a NJ title). The worst thing that can happen is they deny your request and send you back the paperwork and check.

Going the Vermont registration route is simpler than swapping frames Vermont is close to MA too so the turnaround time would be shorter.

That would not only allow you to ride it on the road, not just be limited to the track, you'd be able to keep the bike whole.

I think there is a process to get a new title in just about any State based on it being a lost title. They are looking to check the vehicle isn't stolen, but if there are no other claims on it you should be able to get a title. Who was the last owner to have a title?

A bill of sale is only good in MA if you are buying from an out of state resident who resides in a state that does not title bikes of this age. In the scenario above, the previous registration is also required before MA will issue a title. I received a bill of sale from a MA resident, which on it's own is useless in MA. I understood that was all I was going to receive as part of our deal. I am convinced through our discussion that he was the legal owner and he is not willing to do any work to get the title.

If you own a vehicle in MA it must be titled. I have to imagine that if the Vermont DMV receives a registration request from MA, that there needs be a title presented. They must know that MA vehicles are titled.

Hearing from someone from MA who simply possessed a Bill of Sale from a MA resident and was approved for a registration in Vermont would be helpful, but I think a great deal more work is required.

VMASS, first i apologise , for some reason I was thinking you lived in New Jersey instead of MA. Not sure why I was thinking that.

To answer your question though, the answer is VT would not care what state the bill of sale came from. My bill of sale was from Florida and I think the bike was originally from NY. But the title was lost. So legally I could go that route. There was no existing Florida title. So once I received the VT registration, I used it to apply and receive a Fl title.

Question is, does MA keep a record of the VIN if the bike was originally titled there? If so, I can see there being a problem once you try to use a VT registration to apply for the MA title and the VIN matches an existing title.

Not really, you are doing nothing illegal, you simply want to know that you have not purchased a stolen bike. I'm sure the police would be happy to help you in that regard. They don't want stolen items to transfer hands. Just a note, local police would not suffice. Would have to be someone in your state authorized for these type of checks. In my state, they said I can use the DMV officer, or State Trooper, or County Sheriff. But not local Police. The Sheriff met me at the Mc Donalds (this was in a different county then mine). I had made some calls a few days ahead with that county's sheriff's office to get info and set this up. The deputy came out and met me and did the odometer reading and ran the check and filled and signed all the appropriate paperwork which I had pre-filled (downloaed form FL DMV). This was 300 mile round trip form so I didn't want there to be any issues. I did this all in the same town which I purchased the bike. If I had found out it was stolen, I would have asked the Sheriff to come back with me to the seller and get my money back. There was no charge from the Sheriff's office for the serivce.
