Is there a common rear shock to lower the rear a bit?

I ordered some sportster 883 shocks and slid the fork tubes up an inch in the tree. That plus this seat looks like it should get the height were I want it.
So far I pulled off all the panels, hard bags and fairing, bled and lubed brake systems, as well as a new battery.

Next up is going through the carbs, new plugs, wires, and carb intakes.

The shocks may hit the sprocket bolts or chain. I'd check.

The previous owner had spray bombed this poor thing black.
So tonight it got it's first paint stripper bath.

I'm thinking of ordering a cheapo sandblaster to help finish it.

Carburetor cleaner and a soft wire brush should get the paint off. If you sand blast you might make more work for yourself. Be patient and know it will take several sessions to get it all

Carb cleaner wasn't going to move this stuff. The paint is 1/16th inch thick in some places, completely covering stampings and roll marks.
This is only the first bath, of several.

No, I'm taking notes from your thread.

I feel your pain with the "spray bombed" paint. My last project was completely covered in some kind of clear coat.

Sand blasters work great but I have been cautioned not to use them on fully assembled engines. People say the sand will find its way inside, I have never actually seen it happen. Just a data point.

Yeah, I wish I could just leave it be, as it looked okay, but I can't stand the look and I really prefer natural metal.

Very true, Sand can definitely make it where you don't want it to go if you aren't careful.

Soda blasting is an option. Cheaper than a sand blaster but not as effective as or fast.
To speed things up you can use some aircraft paint stripper. It loosens up the paint and once dry the blaster finishes the job. Just don't get it on stuff you don't want to repaint.
