Have another 1015cc picked out for another the upgrade later on through Brian...

Concept is simple enough... I think anyways... :S

* Pick up another non broken fin 1015cc.
* Save some $$$ and get the 1075cc kit with bore on the new cylinder from Joe Hopper.

NOTE: With the stage one kit from Larry, same .365 cams with OEM 1015cc pistons and such, should be close to what I had originally in the first build regarding acceleration pull/performance so just may leave her as is.

Same time, I have a titled KZ1000 frame & parts to build out down the road... Use the 1075 on this build and the 1015 kit on the next build. All is good for I'll need these anyways...

Life will be golden again for I need my KZ fix.... Damn junkies.... :)

Sorry but double posting this in my project for future reference...

Hey all,

Just a few things/tips on a true story to help others pass these damn AZ emissions testing...

As most of you know, I had major engine melt down where a whole shit load of aluminum dust was sucked into my CR specials thus complete tear down and clean of the carbs was required...

I expected to fail the first pass through emissions to see where she layed but twice... Hmmm, something not right...

Standards @ Idle:
Hydrocarbons: 1800
Carbon Monoxide: 5.50

First two attempts failed... ~ 6.4 over the 5.5 cut off for carbon, hydro measurements was in spec.
Hmmm... Always a PITA for I can get it to idle, and run lean but with no choke help, bitch to start....

While in the office after the second attempt, I asked the attendant behind the counter can I PLEASE see in writing where I'm not allowed to use my choke to start the bike for the test... Your techs keep demanding this but.... give it to me in writing.

Of course he looked at me as if I was from friggin Neptune.... Off he goes to get his supervisor. I explain the situation to him where the techs in the bays say I'm not allowed to use choke to start and this is an idle test after all on a 30 year old air cooled carbed engine, no computer to assist.

He replies, yes, you can use your choke to start but once started, it has to idle on it's own. I say fine, I fully understand that part and agree to that... See you Monday for re-testing....

While going through the old girl again found that my charging was under par... During second test plugs where only getting ~ 11.8Vdc so at 2-3Vdc under spec, oh hell ya that will make a significant difference in the spark/combustion chamber.

Taking notes and DVM measurements came to the conclusion the frame (not engine) ground conductor I used was under rated due to the AFR current demands for heating the O2 sensor... 6 AWG should work just fine... Yeah, yeah I know over kill but what I had left and worked just fine, 13.1 to 14.5Vdc throughout rpm ranges, all good....

So here's the tricks....

NOTE: First let me say the engine timing, ignition timing, valve clearances, charging system, carb sync etc... has to be in spec/operational.

1) Use low Octane full and only have ~ 1/3 tank, no more.
2) Use a hotter spark plug, in my case B7ES.
3) Set your idle higher then normal, ~ 1800rpm.
NOTE: This will be need because you'll be running leaner and the assholes partially block your tail pipe for exhaust flow.
4) Set your pilots leaner ~ 1/4 to 1/2 turn... CR specials this is CCW.

Luv the new AFR gauge.... B)
As can reviewed in the below image, passed well below the 5.5 cutoff @ 3.87... :woohoo:

Once back home, use the Color Tune, put the B8ES sparkies in, Sync Carb and adjust idle....
Once I get out for a good run, I'll make some tweaks for 13.8 to 14.1 while @ cruising speeds.

Good for another year.... B)

Hope this helps someone else out...

I can't believe you have to have motorcycles tested! Especially old motorcycles!! That's brutal. We all complain because we have to have our cars 24 years old and newer tested every other year. Couldn't imagine even trying to pass a test like that on my old KZ. Wow.....
