Next the motor comes out, so everything can be welded in place. The center stand lugs come off, and the kickstand will need to be moved soon. Some small tabs are added for the seat, the tray that will hold the electrics under the tail, the puke tank and the inner fender. H2R fender mocked up on front wheel. A steering damper is bolted on also.

Close-up of H1R rear fender, mounted on the swingarm brace. You can also see the aluminum plate that will carry the battery and the reg/rec.

Is that front wheel an 18" ?

July '07 now. Fredde shows me some Japanese racing Zs and plants a seed in my head about bracing the headstock. I decide I might as well go all the way and decide to do it. some pretty tricky bends and a lot of grinding, but me and Dustin pull it off. We move the tab for the steering damper so it doesn't interfere. Almost forgot, we had to drill the KZ650 bottom clamp for the damper. We welded a nice steel bushing into the hole. Came out clean!
We also welded on a fairing stay lug, just in case...

August is spent finishing up the welding and moving the kickstand. The Z frame has a natural bend right in front of the original kickstand lug. We cut the saddle off and weld it back on right on the bend. It tips the kickstand in so it tucks just behind the lever. Sweet.

I spend a lot of time with my forks because I want to fit RaceTech valve emulators. Can't figure out what damping rod I have even after posting about it here and they have a top that doesn't lend itself to a valve emulator.



I do the research looking at parts diagrams, '77 KZ650C damping rods look like they'd work great. Lo and behold there's some 650 C forks on ebay for $15, from a local seller! The chrome is trash, ofcourse but I only need the rods and springs. I send my forks, 650 rods, springs and H1 springs to Racetech. They mix and match components to get the right preload and send the forks back.

I also fit a fork brace, sold on ebay as fitting H1 forks (which means it should fit a Z1 as well) . Ofcourse, it doesn't. It appears to fit later KZ style forks. Determined, I stick the forks in the lathe and turn them down a few millimeters to fit the fork brace. The fork boots off the 650 forks come in handy now!

I haven't decided yet. I'm thinking something small to keep it revving. Mild port work. Maybe some cams.
