General help, building electrical harness
01 Dec 2024 06:01
I`m in process of building new electrical hardness, and my plan is to use modern connectors.
What is the alternative when it comes to connection all the ground`s together?
Example in front I guess I go with a larger ground cable from the rear/motor to the headlight and in the headlight I can connect all the ground cables coming from the switches etc on the handlebar ?
Thank your for taking time for helping me!

There's a variety of connector updated/sealed types available. I do harnesses all the time but because i restore, i don't deviate from original. What are Your intentions of completion? Honestly i've never deemed it necessary to change the non-latching/sometimes latching in later years original components. These aren't 4-wheelers or dirt bikes ya know. Which i also seem to find in the driveway. Cleanliness or replacement of badly corroded terminals is all one would need. My 2-cents.

My exsisting hardness work, but looks not nice and I have had cable broken eralier.
I have bought M-unit, new modern speedo and new left/right switches to the handelbar.
So my plan was to remove all exsisting cabling and only resuse IC unit, start relay and regulator.
when it comes to connector I was thinking about using Deutsch AT-DT type connectors
www.cycleterminal.com/amphenol-at-dt-connectors.html
I have also bought new cables.
what I not have a idea for is todo what with all negative cables, not a good idea to pull positive and negative cable for each loop from the M-unit? Better to pull one negative to the front and than one positive for each fuction?

I am using deutsche DTM connectors throughout on my build. With the ground I would suggest minimising on chassis return where possible - you can splice the separate grounds at the front end to a single 12 or 14 gauge ground cable and run it back to either the battery directly or to the engine ground where the battery cable connects. Long term reliability will be better with less opportunity to build resistance in the ground line.

Thank you, so minimaize using the frame as ground, will follow that advise.
what is the best way to splice the cable?

Ahh okay, but how to get it water resistant?
example splices from 1 to 4 cables?

Re: General help, building electrical harness
01 Dec 2024 11:45 - 01 Dec 2024 11:46If you choose a sleeve that is just big enough for the 4 cables, then if necc twist and fold the stripped back single cable to be a nice fit in the other end of the sleeve (I prefer to solder these but you can crimp) the cover the whole joint with "heat shrink" sleeving ( you can get it with an "adhesive" coating internally) once shrink wrapped it should be weather-proofAhh okay, but how to get it water resistant?
example splices from 1 to 4 cables?

You are using the sleeve type you posted and solder the cables?
What is the process for solder and use sleeve if so?
I think I understand what you said I was just afraid it wouldn't be water resistant between all the four cables, since I only have one "heat shrink" cover alle cables and sleeve, but I guess the "adhesive" coating make these happening.

I have put a sample together after work which might make it a bit clearer (4-1) if you choose to solder then apply the heat to the centre of the tube until the solder will melt and get drawn into the tube while heating the tube (not melting the solder with the iron)

Thank for sharing!
Why cannot I do these on almost all conections instead of using expensive connectors?
Is the only reason to have the possibility to disconnect some component when they are failing?

Re: General help, building electrical harness
03 Dec 2024 04:41Two reasons, one as you say to disconnect faulty components which need replacing (which will happen on a 40 year old bike) but also if you "hardwire" everything you will not be able to access connections for fault diagnosis and testingThank for sharing!
