Yes, Z1 enterprises sell new buttons with springs, if that's what it ends up needing.

Fixed and cleaned up the points on the starter button. everything is getting power where it should, but no spark whatsoever. Igniter box reading one less volt than the battery.

Worth rummaging around for a used igniter box or should I just go Dyna? any opinions on that dyna ignition?

The factory system is a bit more sophisticated and efficient than the Dyna S. It does not charge up the coils until the crank is turning and uses a lot less power overall. The Dyna S will also require new coils that measure over 3 ohms.

However, any used igniter for the factory system could be suspect at this point.

One option is to make an igniter out of brand new parts. This is not as easy as it used to be, but you might still be able to make one.
Here is one way to make an igniter:

Both of these designs are near 20 years old now, so parts availability will be an issue. Check Digikey.

That link has some BS on it.
The original igniter does not have current flowing in the coils when the crank is not turning, so no extra protection was needed.

The original system is not a CDI so it's rather silly that they would call it a CDI igniter.

Most importantly, you can build one for under $50, so $274 seems overpriced.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configuration

Were there any changes on the gpz engine from 81 to 82? This 82 igniter is on EBAY at the moment and looks extremely clean with an electrical guarantee.

could I use this?

All of the inline-four Kz igniters that physically look like that, are interchangeable. That includes everything from a 550 to a 1000. The differences will be wire length or possibly connector layout. Match the wire colors if they are different.

And yes, all 81 to 83 Gpz550 igniters should be the same.

So it came in , but soon figured out that the different part number was because one of the connecters was a female, as to the oem which is a male. Luckily I had a spare connector and pins. Got everything hooked up and she runs (only took a very eventful year)!!! Fresh wiring harness, coils, caps. plugs, and a used igniter unit.

Anyways. Thank you so much kzriders and especially lou, you never hesitate to share your wisdom and it is very much appreciated! I'll buy you a drink if you're ever in LA. Glad this thread can be put to rest.
