Primary chain jumping over the teeth on the crankshaft? Holy cow! I have never heard of that ever happening on a KZ, and I didn't know that was even possible. How many miles are on that engine? Ronkz650 has a KZ650 (same primary chain setup) with 168,000 miles on it and it hasn't had that happen. Ed

It only has 25000 on it so I'm wondering if it's something I did putting in the new starter clutch help

25,000 miles is just a baby. My KZ650 has about 60,000 with no primary chain issues. Something else must be going on in there. Ed

Yeah that's possible but I don't know where to look or what could possibly be out of line

Time to open it up again. That's one of the reasons I didn't buy that 750 for $400. I don't care for primary chains or a starter buried in the cases. :(

Yeah this really bites there's no way the secondary shaft could have moved it on bearings the bearings are crammed onto that shaft so tight there's no way that I'd loosened anything up there so you have split it sometimes things just suck

Are you sure it's not the carbs being out of sync? That can make the bike sound like that.

Even though the manual has a GPZ on the cover, it's a KZ750 manual, plus there are supplements for all the various updates for each successive year after 1980.

Gasket goop = Threebond 1184. Use Google to find some and then buy it. Lots of sources.

You didn't mention what you are trying to torque so no clue what to suggest other than get the manual.

Try to Download this......
1978 KZ650 b-2
700cc Wiseco kit 10 to 1.
1980 KZ750 cam, ape springs, stock clutch/ Barnett springs.
Vance and Hines Header w/ comp baffle and Ape pods, Dyna S and green coils, copper wires.
29MM smooth bores W/ 17.5 pilots, 0-6s and 117.5 main
16/42 gearing X ring chain and alum rear JT sprocket.

My manual says the chain should have no more than one inch of play..... measure it like you would your drive chain..... mine is probably just under that,,,,, you said you had the oil pan off and could see it skipping while turning it over? I still can't see it slipping unless there is a broken gear or two? Maybe try to look and see if you can see any broken teeth ?
Hey guys is there a way he could mark the chain and gear with a painted mark or something like that...
