I'd send them back instead of taking on the liability he passed on to you.

Good to hear you worked out a deal. $43 to get brass and spare parts is a good deal. What’s the next set in the queue!

edit, I was at my local grocery store last night and Apple Cider Vinegar used to be less then $3 a gallon. Is now sold in quarts at $3.89. The only gallons they had was organic at $33.95. So glad we had “Zero” inflation in July.

I bought two sets within an hour this week.  I was actually searching for carbs for a member here, but when coming across these two sets, I couldn't resist (and no, the member here wasn't looking for VM26's.)

The first set to arrive were these.  -1 on that purchase (although it's all good as a parts set, after price reduction.)
Set two are some early VM26's, the version with the plate that joins the carbs across the top caps.  '77 I think, or close.  This set is one of the cleanest I've ever purchased.  The O-rings were crumbling, but there was NO varnish inside whatsoever, and very little corrosion.  I just finished bead blasting them, and it was a MUCH easier job than most other sets I've done.  Stay tuned for photos in a few days.

Oh, and I'm working to make the appropriate tools to replace the choke plunger rubber seals.  I bought a sheet of Viton rubber per Kaitit's led, and next I need to make the punch tools.  Looking forward to growing my skills on this detail.

Ed, give this a shot. Picked up the pot at the goodwill center. Worked really well. Had one carb that had a bit of metal eaten away as well. But it still worked.

Interesting manual you have sitting on the table. It appears to have details I’ve not seen. Care to share it.

Made some choke plunger donut seals.  Making the tool was a fun project.
