I'm with you Dave. I haven't proven it yet but I suspect that the black foam floats gain weight when exposed to ethanol fuels. If that's true setting the float heights by turning the carbs upside down and measuring the heights means nothing.
If someone had a NOS carb float either for a KZ900 or any of the 1300's that has never seen fuel I'll weigh them against my old floats and perhaps learn something.

Smoothbores, brass floats with solder. I'm sure they don't weigh them.

till you what....i got a auxiliary gas tank coming from z1 with many other items.....i will adjust them upside down and check them with the clear tube afterward....will see how far im off.
but brother and i adjusted the carbs this way for the longest time on our drag and roadrace cycles .
besides if i rememeder correctly thats how it was suggested back in the days.
will post results this weekend.

I believe also, that the measurement probably works when all parts involved are brand spanking new but with wear and age forget about it..

Re: Clear tube float adjustment on 29mm

all right.....so i adjusted the floats my way first....and yes they were off by 3mm.
so i did the clear tube way and adjusted them all.
bike sounds fine...like all fours are burning...but #2 cylinder at exhaust only has a temp off 160 at start up and 260 after warm up ...wiild #1 #3 #4 are over 200 and over 400 after warm up.
did notice a weak spark on the spark plug.....and yes did try another plug to make sure and check #4 wire as well and the spark was bigger/brighter then #2...same coil.
only thing i did not try was changing the plug wire....will try that next
coils are Nology from Italy with 8mm wire and ngk plug boots.
any idea why #2 has a weak spark?

1&4 are on the same coil. 2&3 are on the other coil. Assuming the plugs are clean and not grounding through a carbon buildup what you see on 2 should be the same as 3. The same goes for 1&4.

spdygon thank's for doing back to back test's on both method's.
It show's that when dealing with 35 + year old carb's what worked
when new may not work now.
After all these year's float's getting tweeked and bent can
make the measurement way hard to do.

ok.......finally time to mess around with carbs. so pull out my 26mm from my 77kz1000 quick clean and install them.
got all cylinder firing....actually bike idle better...but starting leaking gas from both "T"s. Ordered already.
so not an electrical issue..
where can i get a rebuilt kit for the 29mm smoothbores?
also need to remove the air jets from the two middle carbs...looks like one side of the jet is broken.
how can i reove them?

Z1E lists some smoothbore parts.

With care so as not to damage the carb's female threads, may be able to use a reverse cut drill bit to help remove the stuck air jet.
And BTW, leaking fuel pipe joints in old "dry" carbs returned to service, may swell enough from exposure to gasoline to soon quit leaking on their own.
Good Fortune!

There is no "kit" it's piece by piece for part's
remember these were race carb's not street carb's.
Back in the day race team's would by part's by the 12 pack.
I got all my smoothie part's from Rob at Z1 call him he'll
take care of you.

the 26mm are apart and clean...waiting on the "T" to arrive.
once i get the 26mm together ill take the 29mm apart and see what is needed.
still planning on how to remove the air jets....
Patton suggest to use a reverse drill bit....can i find some that small?
