Can just use a larger piece of hose (self-threaded into the open drain hole) or a conical shaped rubber grommet (pressed into the open drain hole) to seal the drain hole and accommodate fitment of the clear tube.

I found that it's best to use the smallest diameter tube you can find. That way it's easier to expel all the air from the downward section of the tube. Any air trapped in the down section of the tube will result in an inaccurate reading.

I bought mine off of eBay, some guy in MT. My arbs are VM28s so I don't know if they are the same size drain screw.

When I did mine I used a 2 foot level and marked a line
across the front of my wood work bench and screwed two carb. boot's to
the bench to hold the carb's level.
Piece of plywood clamped in a vise work's good also.

It can be but think about it no two float's weigh or float the same
so measuring them can be off.

Yes it is additional work, but you get it right the first time. I tried the dry float upside down thing and it is not accurate. After 6 times and the carbs still leaking I gave up and bought the clear tube tool. It took all of the fustration out of it and they were spot on the first time.
