As soon as you start subjecting the bike to regular bouts of hard acceleration or racing the cast baffle just isn't enough and you need to fit a gate at the very least or better still a rear pick up.
As for the early bikes pump problems, this was an air lock issue which could happen at any rpm under normal riding conditions and was not related to acceleration induced oil surge and pump starvation.
Also the rumours that the later oil pumps were of a higher capacity is a myth and in fact move exactly the same oil volume at the same pressure as all the other Z9/Z1000 pumps and the only possible advantage of fitting a newer one is that it may have less wear.

If you are using the bike hard - FIT A GATE..

Totally agree, especially about the oil pumps, I could not find ANY difference between the Z900 to GPZ (apart from the GPZ having the pressure release valve on the oil pump housing vs Z900 on the main engine housing).

I am definitely in the drag category, so a gate it is.

If drag racing it use gate but use the NO Drill one the bolt in one tends to leak.

DFIGPz, the one on my Z1R that I made (when it was fairly new) is actually screwed to the sprocket side of the sump and it has never leaked, I was going to make the GPZ one similar to the MTC hinge but was going to pay special attention to ensure it does not leak.

You mention a non screw type, is there one, if so please show a picture or diagram, the other method would require very careful screw lock, is to drill into the oil filter casing and mounting the gate to that??? risky but do-able (only if the screw is 100% secure).

Any other ideas?

Im sure there are other ways ,,
But mine is screwed to a hole drilled and tapped into the bottom of my pan and has never leaked.
Only 30 plus years so far. ;)

Fitted loads that bolt through the pan and never had a leak.
Best way is to drill the pan and tap M6 then spot face the outer surface so that the nut and washer have a perfectly flat surface to sit on.
Use a caphead (Allen) screw with a drop of Loctite to attach the gate and use a nylock nut and washer to secure it.
If that ever leaks it deserves a medal.

This is the way I'll do it. (good idea) Maybe bend the bolt so it won't open too far.

I use the Pogue Racing one get rid of the factory dam that way no drilling in bottom of pan and oil on decel that happens to go back flows easily back to p/u sump quickly.

Swest, I have a similar one on my Z1R but I drilled (I was young a stupid then/ bite me)two holes further down on the outside wall - aligned with the sprocket. I have to admit it does work great with no leaks for the last 30years. I also had a screw to prevent the gate from opening too far.
I am making a similar one to the MTC gate for the GPZ but I will be screwing the bracket into the oil filter area therefore eliminating any leakage issues.
Once I finish I'll post some pics, in the next week or so.

The only concern I have with that is the oil filter area is pressurized so a better chance for a leak. Probably won't matter but I like Naked fun's idea better. B)

Swest, I thought the same thing but with careful threading and using thread lock it should be ok, I'll see how I go, I might still change my mind.

I'll be putting in my new crank soon. I'll do a gate then. B)
