Can I do the clear tube test with the carbs on the bike?

Adios, Kip

Yes; just make sure the bike is sitting level. Ed

@ Tyrell Corp

Yeah, I saw your other post.
The tacometer needle starts jumping around after about 5-10 minutes of mostly idle and some run ups of RPMs. I have to run the bike up to 3-4k RPMs for a few seconds to keep the bike running once the needle starts jumping but even after that once the bike is hot and I guess the plugs are so fouled for whatever reason the bike won't idle anymore and eventually dies out and won't start until I clean the plugs and let the bike sit for a while, I guess maybe to cool down and/or let the possible floaded out gas go *somewhere*. The oil level is Not increasing. Could be though gas is getting *traded* for oil, anythings possible.
Oh yeah, and I gotta start mentioning the bike Never smokes and has hardly ever backfired.

But anyway if it is an ignition problem, where do you recommend I start anyway?

Thanks, Kip

Ok, so a piece of clear tubing clamped onto the gas drain tit and held next to the bowl will give me an idea of where the gas level is inside the bowl?

Thanks!

You may want to check your manual for the exact fuel level spec, but here's a diagram that shows how it's done. Ed

Fuel level spec for this bike is 3mm +/- 1mm. I haven't noticed any starvation or leanness issues at 4mm FWIW.

Do you have a service manual? There's a procedure for checking the entire ignition system in the book. Based on your symptoms, I'd check the pickup coils associated wiring and connectors first. The 4-pin connector between the pickup coils and the IC igniter runs up under the battery cage.

Yeah I got the manul (it's getting pretty beatup now)!
I'll also check into testing the ignition system.
So when I got time I'm gonna do the *tube test* and check the ignition system.

And to Everybody that's helped me I won't just drop out of sight once I remedy the problem (or sell the bike for parts to save my sanity And marriage but mainly my sanity). I WILL leave a final post of the outcome!

You need your Dr Spock ears on here, be logical on your diagnostics, if not personable, like me.

Generally, if it ain't rattling bad off idle or smoking when hot, it is either ignition or fueling.

I always recommend new 7mm copper HT wire and non resistor caps, followed by crimping new female terminals on the coils blade terminals. Try swapping 4 and 1 plug wires, or 2 and 3 and see if the problem persists...again, logical deduction ;)

If that doesn't fix it, and you have fat blue sparks, you can eliminate that ignition part of the equation...for now.

If you check out my 'thar she blows ' thread that was fouling the plug...for good reason. But it was a very audible top end rattle too. As you aren't smoking through the pipe, I think you should try to do one thing at a time and eliminate the (easy) ignition misfire variable first.

Do that first and come back and report then we can (hopefully) isolate problem further.

Nest step would be a compression test, but if you aren't visibly smoking cold/hot then less likely.

Finally, a seal with a ball on it's nose is what I say when I can'y work it out :)

@ Ed and Jack and anybody else...
Ok , when I hook everthing up and turn the drain screw I get gas out and have a great big air bubble in the line.
How do I get the air bubble out and Still keep some sort of accurate reading?

Thanks, Kip

The air bubble is in the clear tube that you're holding against the carb to measure the fuel level? Won't the bubble just rise to the top of the clear tube and go out the end of the tube? Ed
