oh i know. just looking at the possible causes. the thing started right up this morning. cant get over how easy it is to start cold now.
forgot to mention that it felt like the starter was struggling to crank last night too. almost like the engine was seizing. which has me worried.

Take the oil fill cap off and smell for gas. Too rich.

Thought I knew what I was doing when checking the timing on the points but I don't. How do I do it with a test light?

Set them at .014 at full open. turn the crank until the light goes out at the F mark. Adjust accordingly. Clean them first.

So the left side f mark light goes out and right side f mark light goes out? Just to clarify, to set the cam timing I was supposed to use the L mark right. That's what the manual said at least. Took it for another ride without adjusting and it wouldn't start back up withing 5 minutes.

No gas smell from the crankcase. But there was a noticeable noise from the bottom end that wasn't there yesterday. That's probably not good. Oil level was good.

im pretty sure ive got the cam timed correct.

the reason i ask about the static timing is that i watched a youtube video and the guys light went on at the mark. mine was going off. i just found the procedure in my manual and its exactly what you said so i'll try it out tonight. I have also just realized that ive been turning the engine clockwise even though its supposed to be counter clockwise and its stated right in the manual. oops.

That's odd. I worked on a Aprilla that had the cam turning in the opposite direction. The marks were non existent. I had to get the manual. Turns out the counter balancer gear turns the cam gear and chain. I was pulling my hair out over this thing. Finally got it timed but the Alternator rotor bolts had sheared off. (Cheap bolts) Put in hardened bolts, still no start. Automatic compression release. Used starting fluid and it started. Got it running, starts every time and gave it back to the owner. He sold it before anything else went wrong with it. :pinch:
Not impressed.

Oh, the cam chain adjuster is hydraulic, loose power, cam chain skips.
