Is it possible that the ignition advancer cam is mounted 180* off? I don't know how the KZ305 advancer is set up, but the KZ650 advancer has a little cam that can be mounted correctly or 180* off. When mounted correctly a little line on the cam aligns with a little hole in the backplate (see arrows below). Ed

two coils
advancer has a hole on the back and a pin on the cam to line them up. i know the advancer is aligned correct as ive checked timing twice now, correcting the timing the first time. i'll check it for those marks though.
just got back from removing the carbs, removed the bowls and inspected. couldnt see anything wrong. still clean. found the idle mixture screws were turned out 3x instead of the factory 1.5 so i adjusted them. when putting the carbs back on i found that i had not put them all the way into the carb holders on the head so they are now fully seated. still no luck starting. plugs are still dry. i really think its still a fuel issue and not ignition but im no sexpert.

You didn't answer me, do you have one coil or two?

I missed it. Try switching leads or plug wires. I've done it and I've had this bike 40 years. Also, you say you have compression. Did you use a gauge or the thumb test. If you use your thumb, you shouldn't be able to keep it over the hole and you should hear a loud chirping sound as it is forced off.

Just my thumb. Could not keep it on the whole.
I know I have the correct leads as they are very different from each other and would not work on the opposite side. The connectors could be a problem but I just assumed they were right because of my lack of smarts when taking them apart as I just took a shitty picture to remind me how they were together.
Would be nice to see a wiring diagram for the coils but have had no luck finding one.

Just switch the two wires going to the points.

Thanks for that. I found the whole diagram in my service manual after I wrote that.

Maybe this was covered before but the wires coming out of the front of the coils (the non HT ones) are often easy to get mixed up. There should be a couple of earths going to the frame and couple of lives(?) connecting in to the loom,I think .Check that these are good and connected the right way around.
Electrics are not my strong point but ive had this happen to me before. Good luck.

Even though your plugs are dry, with starting fluid or carb cleaner, you should at least get it to rev up or a pop or something.

Well it was painfully obvious when I compared the diagram to my wiring that the coils were switches. It fired right up when I fixed it. Pretty embarrassing.
Thanks for all the help guys.
