gumby prichard wrote: yeah, i know that, but does it make sense that the exhaust valves are two completely different sizes?

Yes. The shim size is dictated by how far the had to cut the valve seats to get them right.

and also if not, should i just make both exhaust valves equal sized shims?

NO. You must use the shim that gives the correct clearance.

It looks to me you have pods on and they're not connected to the box. Your in for a lot of guessing of carb jets, with open pipes and pods. The carburation is messed up as it sits. Check the point gap and timing also. You may have dirty carbs also. Bob

that is not my bike. i was using it as an example of what my bike was doing. i run completely stock. but i believe the problem is the valves are out of spec.

ok guys, so i went to this site and calculated my proper shim replacement size. www.maultechatv.com/techguides/Valve%20C...Calculator/index.php

apparently if i move to a 140, 155, 150, 150 it will give me a clearance of .005 which is supposedly just out of spec..(.002-.004) but i have read most people suggest moving to .005 stating a measurment that small won't make a difference, and it will give you a longer period before changing your shims again.

can this be confirmed?

I haven't found that my clearances change that much. I wouldn't adjust to a wider gap in anticipation of it tightening up.

Keep in mind a wider gap runs noisier.

hopefully you have set up a Valve clearance MAP of what your clearances are and the corresponding shims. There is one in "File Base" you can print out. www.kzrider.com/filebase/doc_download/41...earance-record-chart
Then here is also the shim chart: www.kzrider.com/filebase/doc_download/107-valve-lash-chart-02
Now if you can turn the Cam Follower/ Bucket with your finger, but can't get a .002" feeler gauge in there, go Down two shim sizes. If you get .005" of clearance that will quickly change again when run for a few hundred miles, as there is most likely some carbon on the face of the valve from leaking.

that is correct i can't get a .002 feeler gauge in but i can turn the buckets with my finder easily. SO i will go down two sizes, and i believe they are measured in incriments of .05. Thanks motor head :P

I target a range of .003" - .005" on mine just because a slightly wide clearance won't kill anything but a tight one can burn a valve seat.
