The diameter of that pipe tells a story. It has the smallest diameter tail section of any other ones, that is why it performs much better. The air flow is restricted just right for the engine.

You get too big and you lose it all. It would be nice to have someone explain the workings of a pipe along with how the charge likes to escape out the exhaust port.

Some pipes have an enormous tail section thats good for nothing, but it's the smaller section of the pipe that helps the backpressure demands and that saves the pipe from being completely junk.

If you get just the right amount of back pressure in relation to the diameter, you have the arrival times and correct pressures to enhance performance more than a little bit.

Especailly at the right rpm.

I think carb size has to do with with frequency and wave timing as well, as the larger the opening the diff. in speed and pressure wave amplitude.

I got bridges for sale too :woohoo:

If you will notice, MAC uses the same small pipe in their system. That small pipe runs for about 12" before it leads into a muffler.

The pipe has purpose in it's application, just like everything else. Sometimes you want a large one sometimes you don't. In the real world, people buy pipes based on looks & cost. Seldom does anyone actually do any real research into which one might actually be better for their intended riding application.

V&H, Kerker, Yosh..... the're all good pipes and you'd be hard pressed to see any significant differences between the bike's overall performance if you tried all 3 on a bike.

The higher the state of tune the engine is at, the more critical exhaust systems become. Muzzy used to have different pipes for different tracks. I've seen situations where 2 race headers were swapped out on a KZ. One ET'd better, the other gave more MPH.

You'll see far more performance characteristic change from cam swap than from all the pipes ever made for a KZ ;)

Watch "Truth in 24" - Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport (i.e. 24 Hours of Lemans Audi Turbo Diesel Prototype Race Car) explains that noise is actually a form of wasted energy.

I really like that analogy. The words sound good and it actually makes sense.

No one currently markets Yoshimura exhausts, You may get lucky and pick up a used one on eBay, but they are rarely offered. There are apparently copies of Yoshimura pipes being offered on one of the Japanese sites (WIN-PMC), but they are very pricey.
