Hey, all! Thanks to everyone who has written kind and encouraging words. I'm glad to be a part of this forum and all it has to offer. I came here with little knowledge of anything motor related and have learned so much... with so much left to learn, of course...
I just returned from a weekend in Sonoma, California... a little r&r... such a shame, because those roads are made for a bike... I turned green everytime I saw a bike roll by. Most of them were Harley's though (boo hiss!) hahaha...just joking
Anyway, I haven't had a chance to break into her yet. I still need to deep clean the room I intend to turn into my "engine room". If what happened could have been caused by a tiny speck of dirt, then I'm taking no chances...
I'm still hesitant to break her down all the way... I plan on pulling the top end, pulling the oil pan and flushing everything out... is this just asking for trouble again? Larry said to flush the crank with kerosene and then drop the pan and spray it all out with brake cleaner.... anybody else have any suggestions??

and not to mince words, but the name is BRENDAN... hahaha

"An engine room" My kind of guy!

all kidding aside, that is a very smart idea....when i was in high school, i worked at a place that used to do foreign work , mainly jag e-types and mg"s...we had stuff we would restore and go right on a trailer...had an engine clean room in the back that was dusted weekly....
i know when i did my motor, the bike sat on a carpet and i vacced garage every couple of days...everything covered with rags when nothing was going on....

If that is the case it won't be clean for long.

Excuse me moderators for not adding any technical input.

I just trying to get the happy banter back in the post that so much needs it.

Brendan

We are talking about your 1000p, correct? I take it, that it was one of the last years, with the old style 900/1000 head and valve cover?

When you get it apart, I would like to see some pics of the oil pan and oil pump. I know they are made different, then the older pans and pumps. The oil pumps, look bigger to me. I just havn't checked them out closely. The inside of the pan, has different webbing. I am just wondering, if the pump will fit, an older bike?......The cops get all the good stuff!

You know what, I'm not sure... it's a '78 and the PPO probably did some "improvements" that I'm not sure about.
I'll take pics when I start tearing her down...

With all this clearing of the air and relative buddy approach on help..............why did the mods kill my post ? Nothing inflamatory. Just a thank you for a part and a desire to compensate for it ,and an acknowledgement of one mans wisdom. What gives ?

Thinking about larry's cleaning post,, I wonder if a pressure pot could be put together using a cheap paint gun, you could add solvent and attach it to the oil pressure port and force clean all the oil gallies and bearings, after it is all clean,, you can then do the same thing with oil to pre prime the motor.

Just a thought

So I have a question about the gaskets... seeing as how I just barely replaced the top end ones, do I need to do so again? And also... is there a place I can buy JUST the oil pan gasket?

If the gasket didn't break when the pan was removed you can reuse it. I've removed the pan on my J several times for inspection/cleaning and have had no problems reusing the gasket.
