Never owned a helmet until I started dating the ICU nurse, she insisted I get one and ware it. So I picked a nice HTC full face from the local shop. The nurse and I don't talk anymore and the helmet went away on CL. Been considering another, maybe a vintage open face

Shoei Air because I value my head (not all do, my head that is).
:silly: There is a lot of good helmet’s out there, so the question is more, what helmets fits your head the best.

I have a Scorpion EXO full face, which is usually my choice for road riding, but have a Bell Motocross styled ones for riding Enduro and off Road. I do have a DOT "Piss Pot" German style helmet, but rarely wear that, if you've seen what happens to people's faces when they slide down the black top, I'm not real comfortable without that protection,.

My general answer would be one that's DOT and SNELL approved, that way you know it's a good helmet, after that it's down to fit and comfort, some can start to hurt your head, I often find the helmet is too short from front to back for my head and so it presses on my forehead, something you may not notice if you don't consciously think of it when trying the helmet on, but something you will be aware of after 40 miles or so. There are so many good helmets around, it's really down to what fits, what you like the look of and what's on sale etc. They change the graphics etc. quite regularly so there are good discounts on end of the line ones.

If you ride a a lot in hot weather the modular helmets seem a good idea, protecting your face while being able to flip the front up when stopped and getting on or off the bike so you don't get so hot. They are pretty pricey though relative to the equivalent full face.

Once upon a time I was riding from Calgary to Edmonton on highway 2. It was raining pretty good so I was down to about 50 MPH. Some guy on a CB750 passed me going about 60. Right after he passed me his rear wheel started doing the horizontal mambo and he dumped it. Luckily I didn't run over him or his bike. He tumbled a bit as he came off of it and his head smacked the pavement 4 or 5 times before he came to rest under an overpass (which I thought was considerate on account of the rain).

I stopped to see if he was dead (and he was in my lane by now). He got up slowly, we had a cigarette, straightened out some bits and went on our way. His helmet looked like shit but his head was intact. I don't ride without a helmet.

Agreed with many others that as long as it's got a sticker on it the main thing is fit. I have a massive noggin and have a hell of a time finding something that doesn't hurt.

Helmets are like shoes. I don't buy used and make sure it fits. Mine is a G Max and it's two and a half years old. It's a modern one and is light compared to some of the others.

Mine is the blue one. I'll buy another when this one wears out.

When I first started riding the law here did not require helmets. I wore one about 50% of the time, but always in the winter to keep warm. A dump truck pulled out in front of me and I hit it hard with my head - hard enough to shove me off he back of the bike and cause me to momentarily lose consciousness. It was winter at the time, so I was wearing a helmet. The impact took a half-dollar size chunk out of surface of the helmet at my forehead. I was not injured. Without the helmet I would have been dead - no doubt about it. The whole accident took about 2 seconds; I had no time to react. Since that day I have never ridden without a helmet. At the time I was wearing a Bell shorty helmet. Today I wear a Shoei full face model. I'm not what anyone would call a safety nut, but I highly recommend you wear a helmet every time you ride because you cannot predict when some idiot driver may do something that will kill you. Ed

I've got a soft spot for the bell custom 500. When the new models come out, you can pick up the old ones for like 60% off. The pinstripe is my daily driver. Red one is actually too big, so I use it when it is really cold and I have a lot of layers on my head.

The full face icon is nice, I don't remember the model but it was $140. I use it for recording otherwise it just sits. It just doesn't seem like a helmet suited for upright riding positions. The

I own four helmets 1 half helmet, 2 open face, and a full face helmet. If I have to recommend a helmet for full protection, it will always be a full face helmet, the other two look cool, don't give you full coverage, they protects your skull but not your face. I lost a friend because he had an open face helmet with visor, it did not do him any good when his face hit the traffic light pole head on. Others have had minor road rash in their face wearing half helmets, but if you believe in the Lord, when your time is up, it does not matter what kind of helmet you have on.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.
